Letting Kelly hit in the bottom of the fourth was a pretty bad decision and his hook has continued to be dangerously long. He manages his pitchers like this is a game in May.

Kelly was pitching lights out at that point. I would have keep him in there too. Hes not even the most useless hitting pitcher ether

I just don't think its smart to expect Joe Kelly to come out and pitch a fifth inning of well above his head and given the situation and what your expectations should be of the 5th and 6th innings of Joe Kelly you take your shot at building your lead. Especially since you have Miller in the pen and the only reason you don't do it is Miller can't give you 2+ quality innings in which case why is he on the roster. Of course this also begs the question of why Mujica is on the roster as well given that they clearly don't trust him in anything approaching a situation with a modicum of leverage.

It's fair to criticize Matheny for not PH'ing for Kelly there. The only thing I can say in defense is this:

Lynn is going tomorrow and it was the first of three straight games. If you use Shelby in that situation, you have no long man for tomorrow. Were that game five, I think you PH for Kelly every time, but since I'm not really sure if you can get anything out of Shelby right now, and Mujica is effectively worthless, I think you're taking a pretty big risk. Altogether, I'll stick with something I've said since the Pitt series: Freeman should have Mujica's spot on the roster.

Ultimately, that was a failure of Oquendo (for not sending Yadi on a softly hit ball up the middle with a CF that has a poor arm), Kozma, for being Kozma at the plate, Carpenter, for not executing, and Matheny.

That also ignores the massive blunder in not getting Holliday home from third either. The Cardinals probably should have scored 6-7 runs last night with little issue. Fortunately, they escaped.

Now, we have to hope that Lynn doesn't go Section 8 and we can kick these mother****ers when they're down.

I disagree. We needed another inning or two out of him. With Lynn going the next day, he could melt down in the 2nd inning. We have Mujica taking up a roster relief pitcher spot. Who knows what Miller has in the tank.

We don't have the depth in our bullpen to throw 10-12 innings in two days.

No one is thinking every run is precious like it will be on Monday night. This should be the offensive game of the series.

I liked Wong's performance. He has sucked balls since coming up. Goes into the WS cold. Gets a hit, steals a base, makes a defensive play. Go with the hot hand and pull Freese.

Yeah, if there's one game where one or both of the offenses could break out with something big, its this one. I wouldn't be opposed to them benching Freese in favor of Wong, but I don't see it happening until we get leads in games.

On a side note, I just read that October 27 was the date that Boston clinched the series in 04, STL clinched it in '06, and Freese had his epic Game 6 in '11.
