AP:T-Rich still delivering the blows for backs

T-Rich still delivering the blows for backs

The Associated Press

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. | Tony Richardson rumbled for 14 yards against Tennessee last Sunday. It was his longest run since 2002 — when some of is teammates knew of him only from a video game.

“They said I looked like the old T-Rich from the Tecmo Bowl days,” Richardson said with a smile Friday. “That was pretty funny and they razzed me a little bit.”

Richardson, who turns 37 in a few weeks, isn’t know for his running. He’s known for popping linebackers and creating holes for running backs — four of whom rushed for 1,000 yards. Thomas Jones of the Jets is just 50 yards away from joining the T-Rich club.

“Oh, man, he’s the best fullback in the league, hands down,” Jones said. “He comes off the ball, he hits guys, he can catch, he can run. He can do it all.”

Richardson is satisfied being the man in front of The Man in the backfield, and realizes it’s a job not suited for everyone.

“You’ve kind of got to be a different type of person to want to go in there and smash people,” he said. “I enjoy it and that’s why I still play this game.”

Richardson, whose career began on Dallas’ practice squad in 1994, helped Priest Holmes to three consecutive 1,000-yard seasons in Kansas City during 2001-03, and Larry Johnson in 2005.

He did it again the following season in Minnesota with Chester Taylor, and was instrumental in Adrian Peterson becoming a star with 1,341 yards as a rookie last season.

“What I really liked about Tony prior to him getting here was his ability to always find his man,” Jets coach Eric Mangini said. “It may not have the same thump as it once did, but he’s very effective at finding the person he’s supposed to block, getting him taken care of and giving the back a chance.”

Other news
•A FINE MESS: Dolphins linebacker Joey Porter was fined $7,500 for unsportsmanlike conduct for verbally abusing the opponents after a play was over. Raiders Gerard Warren was fined $5,000 for roughing the passer against Denver.

•WON’T PLAY
: Bills starting tight end Robert Royal and starting cornerback Jabari Greer won’t play against the 49ers on Sunday. … Wide receiver Plaxico Burress will miss the Giants game against Washington.

•STILL PONDERING: Browns quarterback Brady Quinn is still deciding whether to have surgery on his damaged right index finger. He’s finished for the season, but doctors have given him the options of having surgery or immobilizing his finger in a split for six weeks — after which he may still need surgery.

I disagree that he doesn't make it, but I also contend he's not JUST a blocking back. He's known for being able to do it all, and he's been doing it for a long time....

So you actually think that T-Rich is a legitimate HoF candidate when he becomes eligible?

^^^ DAMN I hate Carl Peterson. All this article does is make my blood pressure go up cus we really could have used T-Rich the last few years. Instead they tried useing a LB or TE to play full back Notice Herm Edwards is allways puting players out of position. Our center should be guard, our DE is on the wrong side, oh yea we did the option with a "WR QB" against the ^^^ DAMN Raiders the last time we played

I totally agree. With him turning 37 this year it would've been perfect timing for Cox to come in and start splitting snaps and learning from TD Richardson. Would've put us in position to go from one good FB to the next, with no lag in between.

Man, how great did Priest Holmes have to feel, lining up in the backfield with Roaf, Shields, Waters, Tait, and T. Rich all standing infront of him. That's like running behind the Great Wall Of China.
