Gordon named Texas League's top player

WICHITA, Kan. - Former Nebraska All-American Alex Gordon has been named the Texas League Player of the Year.

Gordon, Kansas City's No. 1 draft pick in 2005, is playing for the team's Class AA affiliate in Wichita, Kan. He is among the league's top five in 13 offensive categories. The third baseman is hitting .324 with 29 home runs and 95 RBIs and leads the league in walks (71), slugging percentage (.594), OPS (1.022), runs (109) and total bases (277).

The Lincoln Southeast graduate was the league's player of the week for Aug. 21 to 27, and for July 24 to 30, as well as the player of the month for August. Since July 1, Gordon is hitting .354 with 57 runs and 59 RBIs in 53 game.

Gordon led Nebraska to its Third College World Series in 2005, hitting .372 with 19 homers and 66 RBIs. He earned the Dick Howser Trophy as the nation's top collegiate player and was a two-time Big 12 player of the year before being chosen second overall in the June draft.

Wichita outfielder Billy Butler was named to the Texas League postseason all-star team along with Gordon.

The Wranglers will play in the postseason for the first time since 2003, opening a best-of-five series in Tulsa on Sept. 5.

Expecting great things from the kid, can't wait till he's up with the big boys. Well I guess not really the big boys, cause we dont really have any of them on the Royals roster untill he and butler make their way to the team.

Actually, Huber was just as good last season in Witchita.

I also think Teahen and Shealy have been good for us this season.

I still can't stand seeing Damon in Pinstripes. I hated him in Bostan but with the Yanks its just downright sickening. Some large city teams should just buy us out and go ahead and make us what we really are. Just another farm club.
