Bosa rejects Chargers "best" offer

Michael Gehlken
Michael Gehlken – ‏@sdutGehlken

Chargers proposed to Joey Bosa what they made clear is their best offer, source says. It was declined. Offer pulled. Two sides are nowhere.

and it's his money, why should the team continue to make money off of it?

Other than that, this is about when he receives the money, not how much.

And why would someone care about WHEN they receive their guaranteed money?

A. Interest

B. They're a greedy douchebag.

I'm not siding with the Chargers. I couldn't give a flying ****. I hope he sits out the season. It'd make for some good drama.

I just want you to have your facts straight. If you're going to make such a strong opinion one way or the other, at least get the facts straight.
Why would wanting to make money off his money and not let the team make money off his money make him a greedy douchebag?

First of all based on what I've read they want to defer to March, so it's 6 months not a year. Also not getting any of his signing bonus or his salary is going to cost him even more. What is the full 17 million he's passing up worth over a year. Not to mention the fact that if he moves down he'll actually get less money and have to wait longer for it.

I agree the Chargers are being foolish here too, however the player has way more to lose in this case. The Chargers will have lost a top 3 pick, the player will cost himself millions of dollars, all because he's worried about getting part of it in 6 months

My understanding is the offsetting language would only prevent him from "doubling up" on signing bonuses by collecting the Chargers bonus & then after being released sign with another team for another bonus. If that happens he's still getting the money it's just coming from the other team instead of the Chargers.

The fact that the Chargers are even worried about what happens if they release a #3 overall after one season is a whole different issue.

I do not know anything about the wealth of his family. If that is the case, why play football? Bosa should just go and work for his family because any way you slice it, San Diego has the advantage.

The trade deadline passed, therefore he has one option - Sign or sit out the season and lose millions of dollars. What team in their right mind would select Bosa in the first round after sitting out an entire season?

I agree with everyone who called him selfish. Walking away from almost $19 million on the table at age 20-21 years old is absurd.

Meanwhile, the other 31 teams are breathing a sigh of relief that they did not select him in the first round.

Just my opinion.

Why should the team make money off of his money?

To me, both sides are idiots in this. Bosa will likely lose $10+ million if he sits out for the year, and the Chargers will have effectively had their 1st round draft pick stripped. It's dumbfounding that they can't reach an agreement.

If what we have heard are the only issues, it is beyond stupid.

They should probably force ownership to sell the Chargers to someone who cares about the sport. This whole thing is an embarrassment to the league and exactly what the rules in the CBA were put in place to prevent.

I've said this before and I will say it again. The offsetting language is a moot issue. NOBODY cuts the 3rd overall pick in their first contract. EVER!! So the idea either side even thinks that it matters is crazy. Dee Ford is a good example. He was taken way farther down in the draft but was still a first round pick. He has not met expectations yet, but he is still getting every opportunity to work out. Why? Because the team invested a first round pick on him. If he was a 5th found pick, the team would likely have already given up on him. Same with Visa. He will probably be a bust in San Diego, but they invested the 3rd overall pick on him. They will not give up on him and cut him a year or 2 into the contract. That just never happens. So why are both sides making such a big deal about it? Someone just tell me one player drafted top 5 that did not have a career ending injury that played less than 3 years of his rookie contract. Just one. I don't think there is one.
