Let's talk about the Patriots

5-0 heading into a Sunday Night matchup with the Pats.

This should be a good one, men.

He literally broke NFL passing records already, genius. That's the literal definition of accomplishing something Alex Smith did not.

Oh, they'll come back.

And make some excuse about how it's only 5 games into the season and they really haven't figured things out yet . . . . . offense not totally on the same page . . . . blah blah, 5 Super Bowl wins . . . . blah blah, Mahomes hasn't accomplished anything (despite his NFL career being a whole 6 games old) . . . . . . blah, blah, Red Sox awesome . . . . . blah blah 'Go Bruins & Celts!' . . . . . did I miss anything??

I'd be saying the same thing if it were any other QB and any other team, including the Patriots. It's a bit early yet to put his bust into Canton.

All that said, he does look pretty damn awesome, so we'll see.
So, I got married two years ago in Amherst, MA. The wife and I spent the next two weeks trolling around the northeast. One of our stops was in this little area in Cape Cod. It was a Sunday night. We moseyed into this little dive for some seafood and drinks. It wasn't terribly busy save one table of about 10+ Pats fans. They were playing the Cardinals on Sunday Night Football. It was Garoppolo's first start. He had a solid game. Tossed a TD and probably 300 yards. What my wife and I witnessed during this game was nothing short of pure hilarity and some of the most extreme hyperbole that I've ever witnessed. After his lone touchdown pass, one particularly boisterous lad bellowed out...

"Tom who?"

I belly laughed as they all congratulated one another on their various quips implying that Jimmy had just taken his first step toward Canton.

For the rest of the game, and for about an hour thereafter, they all danced and were merry and blew hard about how it was time to move on from Tom Brady and how Belichick had found the next GOAT.

The moral of this anecdote is that I've never seen overreacting to one game, over one backup quarterback, to the level that I did in New England that brisk September evening.

Carry on.

He's 5-0, just like Alex Smith was last year, and Smith had something like 10 TDs to 0 INTs over that stretch.

You're an idiot if you can't see the difference between Mahomes and Alex Smith and this coming from someone who is considered a huge Alex Smith homer on this board.

Alex Smith started off 9-0 once. So did Trent Green. Steve Bono went 10-1. Elvis Grbac went 8-2.

This is an easy game.

I never said anything about their strengths/weaknesses being the same. Pay attention. I was talking about his accomplishments. The only idiots are those who are already putting him in Canton, despite the fact that he has yet to accomplish anything that Alex Smith hasn't.

You either haven't watched him play, or you're in complete denial. Either way, you're in for a major reality check on Sunday

Agreed. More proof that early success means absolutely nothing.

You need to read my post about my experience in the NE area a few years ago. Pats fans are the last group of individuals who should be pointing fingers at those Cantonizing a QB prematurely.
