Interesting Review of 1994 NFL Draft on NFL Network

Maybe it was a repeat showing, but a very interesting flashback recap of the 1994 NFL Draft on NFL Network this afternoon.

They showed archived footage from a behind the scenes broadcast of the Chiefs draft room and showed how the ultimate decision was made to draft Greg Hill in the first round of the '94 draft.

Apparently there was a consensus on drafting a RB, but the choice was between Hill, Michael Bates, and William Floyd. Marty wanted Hill, and Carl appeared to be leaning towards Bates, yet after a heart to heart with Lynn Stiles (who told Carl that Marty has to coach the player, so go with Marty's instinct), the Chiefs of course ultimately drafted Hill.

Immediately after showing this archived footage, a current interview of Carl Peterson is shown where he says that in the end the HC has input, but the GM makes the decision (although the archived video showing the exchange between Marty, Carl, and Stiles seems to contradict that).

Later in the show, they reviewed how/why Charlie Ward was not drafted, and Carl indicated that Lamar Hunt was intrigued in drafting Ward in the later rounds, but Ward refused to guarantee that he would go to the NFL, rather than pursue an NBA career unless he was drafted in the first round.

If the Chiefs had drafted Charlie Ward as a back-up, developmental QB to Joe Montana, maybe there is no Elvis Grbac/Rich Gannon/Steve Bono? Ward was probably about 15-20 years ahead of his time, in terms of his style of play fitting in the NFL, but it is an interesting hypothetical situation.

I like these shows. I saw the 1964, 1974, and snippets of the 1984 version, but I haven't seen the 1994 one yet.

Sad that they were so dead set on a RB when Isaac Bruce was there for the taking.

Lynn Stiles. Holy ****.

This is the guy who had no idea who Ben Roethlisberger was. The guy who had a reputation for relying on film and advice from his network versus doing true due diligence on players. Probably one of the single biggest reasons why Carl Peterson couldn't draft worth a shit for a long stretch.

You mean they didn't draft him for his classic "credit card" TD celebration?

I liked the 2004 one - (Sheli/Rivers/Roethlisberger)

It seemed Eli and her Daddy were more interested in the marketing opportunities available in New york and she ended up getting just what she wanted.

There was some cool footage of Roethlisberger, and the other draftees invited, needling Eli about the situation.

Yet Eli has won more superbowls than his brother in NY. Kind of hard to second guess that choice.

Hmmm... makes you wonder if the NFL might be fixed.
Where's cosmo?

You should also remember that NYG had a decent team that had a bad year, hence the high pick.

Kinda like the Chiefs before the 2013 draft. That worked out well. You guys got Eric Fisher and won 9 more games than the previous season. Imagine if you'd gotten Eli.
