**Official USA vs Germany World Cup Match Thread**

USA vs Germany | Recife | Group G | 11 CT | ESPN

This is the big one.

If the United States ties or wins they advance to the knock out stage of the World Cup. There are also scenarios that are not that outlandish that let them move on if they lose but **** those scenarios.

Good post.

Forgot, 15 of the 16 teams to move on were top 28 in the FIFA rankings.

I think it's only fair to hate the dumbasses posting in this thread. Each side of the argument is equally as obnoxious.

Why would one come into a soccer thread and complain about advancing after a loss? It's silly, and happens regularly in the NFL.(team A needs a win, OR team B to lose)

They did win their way in. They won 3 points in their first game, and a forth in their second game. They earned those points.
comeon man I'm not soccer hating here.

Whether a team make the playoffs with a 7-9 or 8-8, start hot and finish cold or whatever extreme example you would like to give, they still "won" more games than their competition.

Successful Soccer is not based solely on winning matches. It is what it is.

So it's cool with you that a 7-9 team made the playoffs while a 10-6(or 11-4, can't remember) team stays home?

not only that, but why would one then be surprised and claim the people in the soccer thread are being "defensive" when they rip his reeruned posts apart?

If someone doesn't like soccer, then they are in enemy territory in here.

Nobody would think it odd if a Bronco fan came into a Chiefs game thread and complained about not liking the Chiefs and then got pummeled, why would a soccer thread be any different

I don't hate folks who don't like soccer, or can't comprehend the group stage, or have trouble reconciling a continuous clock, or extra time, or complain that it's boring, or that say, with the most sweeping, broad generalization, that "This is why Americans won't fall in love in with soccer like MLB, NFL, NBA"

But they are kind of making me want to.

I'll say this also, the sheer number of "people coming into the thread to bitch" posts in this thread is down from 2010 by a wide margin.

I like the variety of the different sports. Maybe I'm the only one. I'm not a real big soccer fan but I enjoy the the World Cup... I like international competitions, the Olympics, etc. This format isn't much different than some Olympic sports. I don't have a problem with it. I'd agree that a majority of US sports fans are not in favor of games that end in ties though.

That's probably part of the reason why the NHL went to the shootout format... which is exciting but you could argue it's a cheap way to end a regular season game. The NBA playoffs last too long because they put 2-3 days between games. At least the NHL plays every other day... plus the playoff games can often be the most intense of the four sports. Baseball is often bound to tradition, it'd be hard to abandon the 162 game season with all the history and records that go with it. In its favor, the MLB is the most difficult sport to make the playoffs in. It's a grueling marathon and you have to earn it.

You've always been a great sports fan and one the few people who takes the nuances of games unfamiliar to heart instead of being hypercritical or ignorant.
Need more of that.

You are creating a ****ed-up narrative in your head that doesn't exist.

Maybe some other people are bagging on your sport, but when I came in here stating that "American's have a hard time grasping ties" you attack me.
