Chad Johnson gets 30 days in jail for probation violation

Not since Vincent LaGuardia Gambini found himself repeatedly in contempt has the lack of courtroom decorum had such dire consequences.

According to Local10.com, former NFL receiver Chad Johnson appeared in court today in connection with allegations that he violated probation by failing to keep in touch with his probation officer. Though prosecutors initially wanted Johnson to be jailed for the infraction, a plea deal was reached.

Under the terms of the agreement, Johnson’s probation would have been extended to December 21, and he would have performed 25 hours of community service.

“You better thank your lawyer. He did a great job for you,” Broward Circuit Court Judge Kathleen McHugh told Johnson after accepting the agreement.

Johnson responded by slapping attorney Adam Swickle on the butt. Which prompted the judge to call the whole thing off.

She believed Johnson wasn’t taking the situation seriously, so she rejected the plea deal and sentenced him to 30 days in jail.

Johnson pleaded no contest last year to battery of his wife, who has since divorced him. He was cut by the Dolphins in the aftermath of the arrest.

The good news is that he’ll be free in time for training camp. The bad news is that there isn’t, and won’t be, a training camp to attend.

Looking at the bailiff's response, the entire courtroom probably had a pretty good chuckle over the whole thing and if she didn't actually see it with her own genetically-faulty eyes, Judge McHugh was able to piece it all together.

That makes no sense. How the hell would anyone even guess that Chad slapped the lawyer if they didn't see it? Does she have supersonic hearing and can detect when a palm hits an ass cheek?

All the people in the courtroom that laughed screwed him. Had he given the attorney a hug, it never would have happened. Watching that video, he wasn't even trying to be funny.

Here in Colorado we have retention votes for judges. The good judges get 99 percent retention votes and the terrible judges get 85 percent retention votes. No one knows anything about judges so everyone votes for them. My own philosophy is that I vote to kick every one of them out every time, because I also know nothing about them and figure that if it's close enough to make a difference that judge must be completely insane and leg-humping witnesses on the witness stand.

I know that a lot of places have elected judges, too. Ours are appointed. Are there other models?

And this needs to change. All judges know that it's hard for them to be removed and therefore nibble along the edges of their duties because they can. Do just enough to not circumvent their power and get axed, but to satisfy their own personal issues.

If that's the case then it just makes it look worse for her. You can't assume he did something and then make a judgement like that because of it. If someone standing next to her told her then I suppose that's fine but even then, she could have had this ridiculous scenario in her mind of how it went down and made a judgement based off that which is still bad. IMO she's still looks ridiculous.

I would say that being level headed, reasonable and fair would be key characteristics of being a judge. She acted like a little girl who was embarrassed because people were laughing at her (even though they weren't).

She doesn't seem to be very good at her job if she completely changes her mind and sends a guy to jail for something that minor.

Because other than being a Bitch, she did nothing wrong.

This. The bitch got a wild hair up her ass. That is how you say good job in his profession. Funny to say, but it's true. She said you should thank your attorney and he said good game. People started laughing and she went all crazy.

Basically, she told him he should be happy. He was, and did something fun to thank his attorney without thinking. Suddenly, she goes into bitch mode and flops. I understand that judges have control over the courtroom, but c'mon.
