Is Missouri a Midwestern state or a Southern state?

My girlfriend, who lives in the Ozarks, swears it's a Midwestern state.

My dad says it's a Southern state and his family is from the St. Joseph area.

What is it?

Midwest, although I'm sure many people there wish it was a southern state.

It's the same with Kansas. Looking at some of these people, you wouldn't guess that Kansas was never a part of the Confederacy.

It’s Midwestern north of 1-70 and progressively gets more southern. You run south of lake of the ozarks and you’re closer to southern. Overall MW though

St joe is not southern at all. I’m from Savannah just north of there. Much more in common with Nebraska or Iowa than any southern state

Being from southern Missouri, I would concur with the first paragraph. There's a southern mentality, and I was raised to call all carbonated beverages Coke. However, I was always told that we lived in the Midwest when I lived there.

I eventually lived in the St. Louis area for a few years, and I would call it midwestern. It feels more like a city that is east of the Mississippi than a city that is west of the Mississippi.

It's mixture of both. St. Louis is more rust belt city like Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland etc. Kansas City is more westernish more like Dallas or Denver. The Ozarks region is similar to Kentucky and Tennessee. Bootheel is pure Mississippi delta. Joy of being in the middle. Not a true fit for either but can fit in with both.

Missouri is a pretty diverse state. The Bootheel which is part of the Delta region is more Southern. St Louis is totally different and it's not that far away. I don't even know how to define that area. I'd say the surrounding areas are Midwestern. Springfield is Midwestern with Joplin being Mid/Southwestern. Kansas City and St Joe seem more Western to me. Columbia and Jeff City are Midwestern to me. Overall Missouri is Midwestern.
