With the beginning of a new year, it is time for the 2012 version of the Royals Repository Thread. We've got Hosmer, we've got a 2011-dominating Gordon, we've got Moose, we've got hopefully a killer bullpen, we've got a stereotypical slow slugging DH, we've got easily one of the best defensive shortstops in the AL, we've got a promising catcher in Salvador Perez. Hell, we've got offense and promising prospects galore.

We do not have starting pitching.

Oh yeah, we've also got this:



Get ready for, (as of January 2012 anyway), one of the most confusing puzzles of a baseball season in recent Royals history. Will they suck? Maybe, I don't know. Will we be given a year of 0.500 baseball? Possibly, I don't know. Will they win the division and go to the playoffs for the first time in 27 years? For the first time in a long time, it could happen, I don't know. 92 losses, 92 wins, or anything in between would not surprise a lot of us.

Everything goes here except Gameday threads and really big news. If a giant story breaks, the Royals achieve some awesome milestone, or we sign/lose a highly significant player/coach/mascot/whatever, then it might also deserve its own thread. This being Chiefs Planet, please do not clutter the board with new threads about trivial Royals news or you will only annoy those who come here for just Chiefs football. If you aren't sure and its not a Gameday thread, it goes here.

What sort of stuff often goes here? SPchief explained it well, so I'll just copy that:

If you locate something of interest.. ANYTHING.. deals on apparel, best ways in/out of the stadium, giveaways, great stories from this season or from seasons gone by, rumors, trades, anything.... feel free to post it here.

Only a team that wins a pick in the lottery can trade it, meaning that selection can be traded just once. It can't be sold for cash, and it may only be dealt during the season. Trading can commence the day after the lottery is held and is allowed until the end of that regular season. So seeing a lottery pick or two involved in some July 31 Trade Deadline deals is a distinct possibility. They cannot be included in any Winter Meetings deals, however, with trading of picks again permitted at the beginning of the following regular season.

Actually our farm system is not a good as once thought. All of our left handed pitching studs have pretty much busted out or got injured. We need some pitching depth at the minor league level. Beyond Odorizzi,Yentura, and Zimmer our only other hope is that Lamb rebounds from TJ surgery and Will Smith turns out decent. The rest of the minor league arms are nothing to write home about. Motogomery was here in Omaha and he looked like he had no confidence at all any more. Looked like a shot fighter when he was on the mound.

Yordano Ventura, Greg Holland, Cheslor Cuthbert and the No. 32 pick in next year's draft for Matt Garza.

Take all four you think? I'd like to keep Cuthbert or the pick if possible, though I'd give up the above package if this is what it took.

The system is not very deep at the high levels, but it is still quite deep at A+ and below. There's a noticeable 1.5 level gap between the best talent (comes from going HS heavy in 2007, 08 and college heavy in 2009 and 2010).

I'd throw Sugar Ray Marimon into the "pitching depth" discussion as well. A name to bounce around and someone who's having decent success at NWA so far (even with getting bounced around by Springfield, which is stacked with great hitters).

It will still be a top 10 farm system at season's end.

AA and higher names of note:

Odorizzi
Ventura
Montgomery (still just 22... will still be on radars as a prospect if not a top 100 guy)
Dwyer (see Montgomery)
Will Smith (nothing special, but probably a solid back-end guy)
Justin Marks (OK results, projects similarly to Smith)

A+ and lower:
Jason Adam
Brooks Pounder (results haven't been pretty, but he's making progress in year 1 with new org)
Kyle Zimmer
Kyle Smith (2011 draftee has been dominant at low levels early)
Bryan Brickhouse (2011 draftee hasn't been as good as Smith, but has more upside)
Sam Selman (2012 draftee has been impressive early, and his control issues have disappeared)
Colin Rodgers (similar to Selman).

It's not a pitching rich system like what the Mariners or Cardinals are sitting on, but there are plenty of names to watch. Just not a ton of help close.

Oh, I'd start it with 3 of the 4 but be fine with paying that much. Almost would rather have the extra pick next year than Holland.

Can't see a way to do it without Yordano, though, which is too bad.

Question #1. If we added. say a guy like Kershaw and Garza to our rotation for next year. Given our offense RIGHT now. without myers in the lineup. What would you say our projection would be.

I'm a huge Anibal Sanchez fan (have been tooting that horn for quite a while in this thread). It's a different situation, because he's a Free Agent after the year. Honestly, I don't see much point in trading for him. Just chase him in FA.

Guys:

I realize my Garza compensation might be a bit high. I'm probably undervaluing that comp pick. It's a whole new ballgame.

If they could find a way to get Garza surrendering only one of Ventura or the comp pick, that would be a good deal. I just tend to think the price will be driven up by the competition on the market (but I could be wrong). I also am thinking - and I think Deez will agree with me here - that its better to pay "too much" when it comes to prospects. It rarely works out that way.

Honestly, next year's draft is pretty weak, so I'd rather see them keep Ventura. If Cuthbert, Holland and the pick gets it done, that's cool.

A starting offer is probably a little less enticing than what I mentioned... maybe something like Cuthbert+Coleman+Pick. And you talk from there.

Remember that with Garza, even if you only get 1.5 seasons out of him, they would get comp picks for him if he left as a free agent for a big deal (which he is good enough to get, barring injury).

We should just look at inking any two of of Greinke, marcum and hammels. Balloon the payroll 30 to 40 million snd make a run at winning it all over the next 5 years. Our line.up will be stacked until 2017 or so.
