Andy Reid brings detail to Kansas City

Nice little article about Reid's "live" practices.

http://espn.go.com/blog/afcwest/post...to-kansas-city

Quote:
ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – The Kansas City Chiefs are breaking training camp in the Andy Reid era for the first time.

The team had their last practice of camp Wednesday. After a planned walk-through on Thursday, they'll head back to Kansas City to prepare for the regular season.

I got a chance to chat with Pro Bowl linebackers Derrick Johnson and Tamba Hali before camp broke. The two stars are like virtually every other player on this roster – they rave about playing under Reid.

“I know spirits are high in 31 other places, but we feel great,” Johnson said. “It was a great camp. Great.”

Both veterans pointed out details of Reid’s camp that stood out to them. Johnson said he was amazed that Reid, who came to Kansas City after 14 years in Philadelphia, had the team practice “live” so extensively every day. Often, teams scrimmage near the goal line.

While practice was controlled, Reid wanted his players to simulate game action every day in many different situations. It worked. Several players thought the preseason opener at New Orleans on Friday was slower than usual because they were used to the pace.

“It just puts you in better position to make plays,” Johnson said. “It’s invaluable.”

Hali was impressed by Reid’s schedule. The team had the same routine every day: Practice started at 8:15 a.m., and then players would hit the classroom later in the day. Many NFL teams rotate the daily schedule.

“It gave you a chance to correct your mistakes easier,” Hali said. “It was great to go back and see what we did wrong and then the next day on the field, improve from it … It meant we made less mistakes throughout camp. It’s just the little things that coach Reid does that has made us a better team.”

I think it's a smarter hire than Chip Kelly would have been. Although I have to be honest, what I really want to see this franchise find is what they tried to do with haley: a young(ish), hungry coach who can be our Chin or our Hoodie, somebody who's in KC for the next 15 years.

But there's a risk inherent there.

I guess in the end I'd rather try to find the next great coach, rather than hoping we can get one who used to be great back there again.

Sort of how I'd like to groom our own quarterback...

But for years people have been talking about getting Gruden or Cowher out of the studio and onto the sidelines, and that's just not what I want to do. I see going with Reid as a similar kind of deal.

Which isn't to say it can't or won't work...

With maaaaaybe the exception of Gus Bradley or Marc Trestman (only because milkman likes him). But neither of them are the kind of ground-shaking move that Clark needed to bring fans back. His first goal was to hire a head coach IMMEDIATELY before any of the other teams could get their hands on the top guys. It might look strange if he hired Trestman less than 72 hours after announcing he would fix this mess created by the Patriots.
Cowher was about the only other guy that probably would have worked in Clark's mind.

I disagree completely. I don't think the league has past him by or he forgot how to coach, or that he's burnt out, the reports from those that knew him in Philly say the opposite. I think he's a really good coach that needed a change of scenery.

With the kind of year the Chiefs just had, I don't think it's hot assistant time or college to NFL time. I really think it was time for a proven very well respected coach to get the Chiefs out of being a laughing stock.

And he does have some positives. I do far prefer aggressive coaches to anything we've had in my time following the team, and that includes Vermeil, who saddled himself repeatedly to chess-playing DCs - sutton at least attacks, whatever else there is to be said about him....
I think its been mentioned alot, but Reid is usually the type of coach who does well in a new city. Proven winner, but never quite won it all. Still hungry and still has something to prove.

The approval poll of the Reid hire was the most lopsided poll I've ever seen on this site.

It was basically unanimous that the site loved the hire.

The only one I remember as being against it was milkman.

I've been pretty consistent on this since January, but I don't make a huge issue out of it.

And part of the reason I didn't want him here was that I thought he'd bring in Alex Smith. Which was of course the very first thing he did.

And as I've said, not liking him doesn't mean I'm saying it can't or won't work. It's just not the direction I ever wanted the team to go.

But, he's who we have, so I hope he turns this place into what he had in philly 10 years ago.

What did you want him to do? The problem was the Chiefs picked the wrong year to tank. If Luck and RGIII had come out this year, they would have selected one of those guys.

You do have a point. I'm not going to look up the statistics, but I imagine they don't favor coaches who are on their second teams. There are a few recent notable examples of guys who couldn't win a Super Bowl with their first team but did it on the second try (Belichick, Vermeil, Coughlin, Gruden if you want to count that) but in the course of Super Bowl history I imagine 2nd team coaches aren't any better off than 2nd team QBs.

I like to think that Reid wasn't a lazy hire by Hunt, and that he's not just a Norv Turner or Marty Schottenheimer, but I don't have much to point to him being an exception.

I do like the fact that his last two terrible years with the Eagles had him doing far less coaching than at the beginning of his career. It makes me think this change of duties with the Chiefs is what we need to get the winning Andy Reid back.
