Andy Reid brings detail to Kansas City

Nice little article about Reid's "live" practices.

http://espn.go.com/blog/afcwest/post...to-kansas-city

Quote:
ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – The Kansas City Chiefs are breaking training camp in the Andy Reid era for the first time.

The team had their last practice of camp Wednesday. After a planned walk-through on Thursday, they'll head back to Kansas City to prepare for the regular season.

I got a chance to chat with Pro Bowl linebackers Derrick Johnson and Tamba Hali before camp broke. The two stars are like virtually every other player on this roster – they rave about playing under Reid.

“I know spirits are high in 31 other places, but we feel great,” Johnson said. “It was a great camp. Great.”

Both veterans pointed out details of Reid’s camp that stood out to them. Johnson said he was amazed that Reid, who came to Kansas City after 14 years in Philadelphia, had the team practice “live” so extensively every day. Often, teams scrimmage near the goal line.

While practice was controlled, Reid wanted his players to simulate game action every day in many different situations. It worked. Several players thought the preseason opener at New Orleans on Friday was slower than usual because they were used to the pace.

“It just puts you in better position to make plays,” Johnson said. “It’s invaluable.”

Hali was impressed by Reid’s schedule. The team had the same routine every day: Practice started at 8:15 a.m., and then players would hit the classroom later in the day. Many NFL teams rotate the daily schedule.

“It gave you a chance to correct your mistakes easier,” Hali said. “It was great to go back and see what we did wrong and then the next day on the field, improve from it … It meant we made less mistakes throughout camp. It’s just the little things that coach Reid does that has made us a better team.”

Reid brought Alex Smith to Kansas City. I will probably never forgive him for that.

FTR I'm still thrilled we got Andy Reid. Especially after watching him work first hand.

Like I said, he is gonna bring some serious swagger to this team.

I just hope it all works out and that Alex either plays lights out football for us or that he falls flat on his face and that we swing hard in the first round with our next quarterback choice.

Even if it takes trading a stockpile of picks to do so.

Cowher was better than Marty in that he would occasionally show an aggressive bone on offense, but it was basically the same 3 yard and a cloud of dust, play not to lose bullshit.

It's kind of amazing how much Roethlisberger has carried that franchise with Tomlin in charge. They have an almost Reid-like pass/run ratio the last couple years.

Almost equally amazing that this is Big Ben's tenth year in the league, but he's only 31.

I would have traded the entire Chiefs draft for the rights to RGIII and have said so on many occasions.

If that's what it takes, do it.

The redskins gave what equates to about double that.

In the end, it'll be worth it for them.

In terms of merch and popularity, it probably already is worth it to Snyder.

I would have given that whole draft and the next 2 years worth of first rounders...but Pioli wouldn't have ever traded multiple firsts to trade up and said exactly that to Jack Harry.

Over the next two years, there should be options at quarterback where we can draft someone that should be able to give us a wide open window without giving up that much...but won't have near the upside of RG3...but honestly, I don't think there will be another RG3 quality prospect the next 10 years with his unique skill set.

I went to every camp that Trent Green was here and in the two days I was at camp this year...Alex Smith was nearly his equal. VERY accurate and threw it deep more than I thought he would. He unloaded 35+ yard passes at least 3-4 times each practice I attended and was very mobile as a compliment.

Here's the thing, though.

That was devoid of a live pass rush and when the real bullets start flying, the guy takes sacks like fat kids eat snicker bars.

The guys time in KC will be dictated by 4 things:

1) confidence in throwing the ball deep in real games against good defenses. This is as important as nearly anything else because we have a ton of really nice weapons for the short passing game and if Alex can keep those safeties back, he will be able to pick defenses apart.

2) using his mobility and checks at the line to negate opposing pass rushes. He will have a really good OL to protect him and guys with blazing speed in the screen game that should be able to keep defenses honest and unable to just pin their ears back. This is an area that people use to defend Alex (presnap reads and smarts) but he still takes sacks by the truckload. That needs to stop.

3) his play against the better teams we face that have equal or greater quarterback situations. He needs to rise up and play his best ball when we need him the most. Giants, Redskins, Houston, Indy etc. These are the games we should have a chance to win if we get solid quarterback play. He needs to give us that.

4) stay healthy. I don't want to hear the bs. The guy has started barely half of his career due to benchings and injuries and these aren't unknowns. If he gets hurt, the trade was a big fail.

If he can be effective in those areas, he can rise into the talk of a top 10 quarterback over the next couple years and we can beat anyone.

It burned him out pretty quickly.....Jim Johnson when he lost him, I think also set him back, and then when he lost his son, I think that broke him.

Change is good some times.

Also, don't forget Pete Carroll. He was twice a head coach before. he was an absolute disaster. I think it can work the second time around, depending on the situation. And Coughlin is a great example. he got the jags really close, but couldn't finish the deal.
I think his problem the last two years was that he lost the locker room and with it the winning culture he had built. I don't blame him for this b/c as I understand it, the "dream team" was not his doing. I thought it was well documented that the GM was responsible for the influx of free agents.
