Flutie converts NFL's first dropkick since 1941...

Flutie converts NFL's first drop kick in modern era

January 1, 2006

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) -- Doug Flutie added another oddity to his football resume on Sunday when he converted a drop kick in the fourth quarter of the New England Patriots' game against the Miami Dolphins.

It was the league's first drop kick since the 1941 NFL championship game, according to the web site for the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

With starting quarterback Tom Brady sitting out most of the season-ending game, backup Matt Cassel threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to Tim Dwight to cut Miami's lead to 25-19 with 6:10 left in the game. Flutie, who was listed as the No. 3 QB, came in for the extra point and lined up at quarterback.

After a timeout, Flutie took the snap, dropped the ball and kicked it off a short hop through the uprights for one point. He ran off the field and embraced coach Bill Belichick.

According to the Hall of Fame site, Chicago's Ray "Scooter" McLean converted the last drop kick in the Bears' 37-9 victory over the New York Giants on Dec. 21, 1941.

Its legal, it just falls under the "why the hell would you ever want to do this?" category.

If you want the extra point, get a professional kicker, who has done this over and over again his whole freakin life, to kick the short kick for a 95%+ chance of converting. This stunt probably had a less than 50/50 chance of working, so essentially New England didnt care about the game and wanted to crack the record book just for the record's own sake.

The only vaguely legitimate use of the drop kick would be a blown up 2 point conversion where the ball carrier tries the drop kick in a fit of desperation when its clear he wont get in.

John Hadl used to quick kick for KU in the late 50's. It was very effective as Hadl could boom it.

I disagree, I think it was a way to get Flutie into the game since this may be his last season.

I don't think he'll see any playing time even if Brady gets hurt.

Thats fine, but with New England behind in a game that means nothing for the playoffs, if you want to win, you kick the extra point. They didnt kick the extra point, so the outcome of the game didnt mean much to them. Given thats the case, if you want Flutie to play, then well hell, you might as well have him in for the final drive.

And deny what's-his-nuts a chance to lead the team in a pressure situation that he might face come playoff time?

Flutie knows pressure, he eats it for breakfast like:
