Royals vs. Cardinals in KC Weekend Series Thread. Not a game day thread.

Looks to be a good series. Both teams are playing better now than the last few weeks. Dissapointed we don't get to see a Grienke vs. Pujols match up.

Friday, June 19 Kauffman Stadium | 7:10 PM CT
Brad Thompson, RHP (1-2, 3.60)
Cardinals (36-30)
@ Kyle Davies, RHP (3-6, 5.14)
Royals (29-35)

Scouting Report:
Cardinals: The equation has been pretty simple over the years: when Thompson starts, the Cardinals win. In his 27 career big league starts, the Cards are 19-8. Thompson jokes that it's because his teammates know they have to bring the big bats when he pitches, but nonetheless he does prefer starting and at times has done it very well. He's coming off an excellent game in Cleveland and will once again pitch on the road in Interleague Play, adding the challenge of a designated hitter to the opposing lineup. Royals: Davies wasn't spectacular in his last start, but he didn't need to be, and the Kansas City right-hander earned a much-needed win. Davies threw five innings against the Reds and allowed three runs on two hits. But Davies' command gave him fits at times. He walked five batters and struck out one. Davies hadn't picked up a win since April 30 at Toronto, and the victory snapped a five-game losing streak. But Davies has been better than his record indicates. He pitched seven innings and gave up three runs in a loss at Baltimore on May 16, and he allowed two earned runs in six innings in a loss at St. Louis on May 22.

Saturday, June 20 Kauffman Stadium | 3:10 PM CT
Chris Carpenter, RHP (4-1, 1.59)
Cardinals (36-30)
@ Brian Bannister, RHP (5-3, 4.10)
Royals (29-35)

Scouting Report:
Cardinals: After considering going with Carpenter on regular rest on Friday, the Cardinals elected to use Monday's off-day to give him and Adam Wainwright a little breather. So both right-handers will pitch on five days' rest over the weekend in Kansas City. Carpenter is coming off a fine game in which a couple of mistakes cost him a loss. His record in Interleague road games since coming to St. Louis is spotty. Royals: Bannister tossed up another solid outing in his last start. The Royals right-hander threw eight innings and allowed just one run on four hits against the Reds. It was Bannister's fifth quality start of the season, and the loss snapped a string of three straight starts without a victory. Bannister struck out four and allowed just five baserunners. He improved to 6-3 in Interleague Play in his career, and he's already posted one victory against the Cardinals this season. Bannister lasted six innings and allowed two runs in a 3-2 victory on May 24 in St. Louis.

Sunday, June 21 Kauffman Stadium | 1:10 PM CT
Adam Wainwright, RHP (7-4, 3.33)
Cardinals (36-30)
@ Gil Meche, RHP (4-5, 3.31)
Royals (29-35)

Scouting Report:
Cardinals: After a three-start lull, Wainwright looked like himself once again his last time out. The Cardinals would love to see him keep it up for a while. One thing they can count on from Wainwright is innings. Wainwright has gone at least six innings in 12 consecutive starts, and he's lasted seven or more in six of his last seven. The Cardinals are 9-5 in his starts. However, his ERA is 4.38 on the road, versus 2.55 at home. Royals: Meche withstood the 85-degree heat and the Diamondbacks very nicely last Tuesday night as he pitched a complete-game 5-0 victory. He finished with a career-high 132 pitches, including 22 in the ninth inning, and firmly put to rest earlier concerns over his cranky back and his flagging stamina. Meche gave up just four hits and walked two, extending a personal shutout streak to 16 innings. In Interleague play, Meche has a 14-4 record. He didn't face the Cardinals this year in St. Louis, but he beat them, 7-2, last year at Kauffman Stadium.

KC has never been considered a "rivial" by the vast majority of Cardinal fans. Theres no hatred to stir up. Now Cubbie fans...

If the Royals had switched to the NL Central instead of the Brewers that would propbably be a different story. I'm sure we would have a "Real" rivarly going by now.

Sorry to hear about Alex, thought he might be your guy to lead you back to the playoffs. He was pretty impressive when I saw him in a Cardinals series a couple of years ago.

well he his hurt now, his swing looks like a hockey slap shot, and he is projected to be a first basemen now (which we have 10 of them, non mash enough to get the starting spot)

I was impressed with the new "K". Wide concourses. Nice video board. Lots of different selections of food choices. One of the cool things they did with the new Cardinals stadium was incorporate the old school into the new and recognize the past success's. They could have done better with that angle but the bronz statues are pretty cool.

And what I am going to say next is not a disrespect towards the Cards fans, but more towards the Royal fans. I am disappointed in the Royal fans for apparently not showing up to the games when a rival team shows up to play, and the stadium is practically overrun with red shirts. It was ****ing embarrasing to see all that red in the stadium, as if it's like another home game for St. Louis.
expect it until Royals play like winners....no one is going to buy tickets to a train wreck unless you like to see train wrecks. Sad really, I follow the Royals and wish the best in the AL, but not against the Cardinals.

After the Bob Gibson and Lou Brock era and until the Whiteyball era we sucked really bad and still got 25-30K out to the game to watch a bad team.

I left when Kyle Farnsworth came in, I figure if the players and manager don't care about winning, why should I care enough to stick around and watch them lose? I heard the stadium cheer when Green hit his homerun, I knew then that the Royals fans had already left. Worst thing about it was just about ever Cardinal fan I met was from this side of Columbia and were all pretty obnoxious.

BTW, Pujols called the Grand Slam before the at bat:
http://www.stltoday.com/stltoday/spo...9?OpenDocument

KANSAS CITY — Maps show Kauffman Stadium sits at the intersection of Interstate 70 and Blue Ridge Cutoff.

Sunday afternoon, before an audience of 33,805, Albert Pujols moved "The K" to the juncture of Unbelievable and Absurd.

Given the day off at first base, Pujols as designated hitter became a force of nature as the Cardinals completed a three-game sweep of the Kansas City Royals with a 12-5 drubbing.

El Hombre didn't just provide the difference with four hits, including two home runs, his ninth career grand slam and six RBIs; he quite literally called his four-run shot.

After opening the third inning with a fly out, Pujols returned to the Cardinals clubhouse to review video. There he predicted to assistant hitting coach Mike Aldrete that his next at-bat would ricochet off the yet-to-open Royals Hall of Fame behind the visitors bullpen in left field. "He didn't say he might hit the Hall of Fame. He said he would hit the Hall of Fame," Aldrete recalled.

Pujols returned in the fourth inning against Royals starting pitcher Gil Meche with the bases loaded and one out in a 4-4 game. Pujols and Meche reached a full count. By then Meche had shown Pujols every pitch in his repertoire except a change-up. When Meche finally threw the pitch, Pujols swatted it some 423 feet off a Hall of Fame window.

"He's a competitive guy. He's going to go after you and hopefully make a mistake like he did, and you take advantage," Pujols said. "The worst thing you can do in that situation is hit into a double play. I want to hit the ball in the air."

Pujols' slam knocked the air out of the struggling Royals while lifting his team to its eighth win in 11 games. Combined with the Milwaukee Brewers' loss, the Cardinals lead by 1 1/2 games for the first time since May 11.

"If it's 3-2 and he gets a strike, he's going to hit it. He's going to drive it. There's not a question," said reliever Kyle McClellan, who watched Pujols' fourth-inning fly-over from his bullpen seat.

"Face it: I'm playing with the best player of all time," insisted starting pitcher Adam Wainwright (8-4), who benefited from the breakout on a stifling day when he labored early before lasting six innings

That era you are talking about is the "cocaine" era of Cardinals baseball.
The 1970's Cardinals era had several players that snorted the white stuff.
It was a dreadful decade of Cardinals baseball.

K. Green needs to keep having quality at bats. This weekends series he had good at bats and worked the Royals pitchers with long at bats. Green didn't give up any of his AB. All of Redbird nation needs to keep they're fingers crossed that K. Green has his
head cleared up.
