For the third time in my career we were informed on Friday that a stellar male engineer has decided to live his life as a woman. I've worked with him on several projects and I didn't see this coming. He has a BS and MS from MIT. Smart guy, now girl.

My company (9000+ employees) handled this really well. The issue went to the top of corporate HR and when all was said and done everything went smoothly. It was "site specific" and we were asked to attend a meeting. Managers explained that the newly-named "Ally" was starting treatments to become a woman.

I'm old, it's 2014, and Ally is a smart girl. Good for her!

Also, the reason is not the synthetic hormones. According to the same study, it is primarily lack of societal or family support, which leads to increased rates of depression and substance abuse (p. 5). The term to take away from this is 'heterosexism', which is a) the problem, and b) what you're doing.

So what is your position on legalizing steroids? Your ilk constantly bashed steroids for the potential health risks there and completely ignore it here and that was just a drop in the bucket in comparison.

First, just to get it out of the way, transgendered people should be able to adopt, just like anyone else.

Moving on, I'm not sure why you linked to the Vanderbilt page. I'm guessing it's for the section listing the possible dangers of hormone therapy, but it doesn't establish that they are at any more risk than non-transgendered people who take any of those medicines.

The UCLA report has more information in it, but you're misreading it. First of all, it is reporting that 41% of their respondents have ever attempted suicide, while in your first post about it, you said 1/3 of all transgendered people commit suicide. That's a big difference. Also, the authors admit that this number may be inflated due to their methodology.

What's more, the study does not say (because they did not ask) if the suicide attempts have anything to do with the hormones, which seems to be your main point. In fact, more than half of their respondents haven't even had hormone treatment (table 5, page 8). So much for 'the hormones cause suicide'.

There's more. Tables 6 and 8 show that transgendered people who are 'out' have the highest suicide attempt rates. 14-16 show that their suicide attempt rates climb even higher once they've experienced discrimination. 17 shows that those with strong family relationships have the lowest suicide attempt rates, and table 20 shows the same with treatment from police. All of this evidence points to societal factors which elevate the instances of depression and substance abuse. So, thanks for posting that.

As for steroids, I don't know. I have never personally posted on steroids, and to be honest I don't know a whole lot about them. I know some (performance-enhancing ones) are illegal or banned in various places, but I know others were in my flu medicine I took a few months back. For anything more than that, I'm not the person to ask.

You got me on the attempted suicide vs actually being successful. I posted that wrong. What I am saying is we all know the dangers of excessive hormonal changes. You can't say no to steroids which are generally cycled low doses over a short period of time and then back massive doses used over a lifetime and pretend there are not serious conssequences. In essence I am saying if they are not committing suicide outright the hormones taken like this will do it for them. Sex Change = suicide and we cheer for them to do it. It's really kind of sick.
