Jaworski rates Chiefs QB at No. 20 among NFL starters

Jaworski rates Chiefs QB at No. 20 among NFL starters

The Kansas City Star
Former NFL quarterback-turned-broadcaster Ron Jaworski ranks new Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith No. 20 among the NFL's 32 starting quarterbacks.

That's according to Jaworski's ratings on ESPN's MediaZone site, transcribed from his three-minute daily segments dubbed "Jaws' QB Countdown" on SportsCenter and NFL Live.

Smith, of course, was acquired in a trade from San Francisco this offseason, and has yet to throw a pass in Kansas City (aside from OTAs, that is).

Here are some excerpts from Jaworski's evaluation of Smith:

“A year ago, Smith was coming off his best season in the NFL, having led the 49ers to the NFC Championship. This year, he’s the starting quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs. It was a great move by (Chiefs coach) Andy Reid to acquire Smith.

“The defining element of Smith’s play is efficiency. He executes the offense the way it’s designed, and he makes very few mistakes. Last season – for the second year in a row – he was exceptional on first down. In 2012 he led the NFL in first-down passing, with a quarterback rating of 119. Much of it came off play-action, or in the case of the 49ers, hard run-action out of base personnel. There was no better play-action quarterback last season than Smith. He had a quarterback rating of over 132.

“Smith has been outstanding out of multiple tight end personnel over the last couple of seasons. No quarterback has thrown the ball more with three tight ends on the field. You don’t see that very often in today’s NFL.

“This play was beautifully designed with all three tight ends to the same side. First, look at the impact of the run-action on the two linebackers and the safety. This was hard run-action. Then you see that Delanie Walker’s vertical route occupied the corner. That left Vernon Davis matched on a safety, a safety that initially reacted to run. He had no chance on Davis’ wheel route.

“One area Smith improved in 2012 was in the pre-snap phase of the game. He was much better at the line of scrimmage checking and audibling.

“It will be interesting to see what Andy Reid does in Kansas City. Don’t be surprised if he turns Smith loose a little bit and features an up-tempo offense with an emphasis on quick throws. Remember, Alex Smith played for Urban Meyer at Utah.”

Other QB's that Jaworski has analyzed so far:

No. 32 Matt Flynn

No. 31 Jake Locker

No. 30 Kevin Kolb

No. 29 Chad Henne

No. 28 Mark Sanchez

No. 27 Christian Ponder

No. 26 Brandon Weeden

No. 25 Michael Vick

No. 24 Ryan Tannehill

No. 23 Carson Palmer

No. 22 Sam Bradford

No. 21 Josh Freeman

No, if anything I'm more in line with a post or two ao of yours. Ready for the season to start. It's been well established who thinks Alex is good, ok or horrible. I want to see how it plays out. And it would be amazing to just win a couple more then the doubters expect and a few based on last minute drives by mr smith, so the majority of CP can Mecca the the vocal majority on his topic. And no, I'm not betting sig rights, time on CP or anything else for it.

Of course you're not because you know that's not happening. But I love how the majority is going to do that to itself.

Er, I mean truefan.gif Yeah!!! Let's go Chiefs!!!! Home of the....CHIEFS!!! **** yeah...ohmygod I just ****ing jizzed in my pants thinking of Alex Smith and how...nice...and injured he always is. But he's such a nice guy that I want to keep rooting for him.

Maybe we'll get lucky and we can trade our 2015 2nd and 2016 3rd or 2nd for Cassel so we can have a nice guy true fan QB competition. Nah, we can't do that, we gotta fluff up their egos, let them know that just one of them is our guy and no matter how mediocre to outright terrible on the field he is, that he's still the starting QB, until he gets injured but then of course once he's no longer injured he should get the starting job back no matter how good the backup was playing in his place.

Maybe if we're really lucky we'll get to play the 49ers in 2014 and Alex can be like "yeah I wanna stick it to them" and then our defense will cheap shot Kaepernick all game and make him throw up and then he can go on to win a Super Bowl beating the shit out of the Chargers and we can gloat about how overrated and total failures the Bolts are. It'll be like the glory days!

Don't have to be perfect. But it would be nice if it the QB was at least worthy of being drafted in the 1st round.

You first you stupid hateful ****!

Yes it was just the Jags that passed on Geno in the 1st, that's why he went in the 2nd round.

It is pretty ironic and hypocritical.

I have seen multiple people post recently "well if we had drafted him he may have ended up a better QB"

Milk still sticks up for the guy.

This list is inferior to the 2013 draftables list at this time last year. Who knows how it will work out and what they will latch on to and love. I'm sure it will receive less hate than the 2013 class, though, because it will not be compared to the 2012 QB class.

Bridgewater is the only guy in there that I have any real interest in, and the odds he is around when the Chiefs pick are slim and none (unless he is getting beaten up in the eval period, in which case he won't be good enough 'value' for the Chiefs to 'reach' on).

Logan Thomas is literal garbage.

Murray is undersized but at least smart. He's not a franchise QB, but I could see him being a solid game manager sort.

Boyd, Manziel and Miller are all great running threats, but have even less sophisticated passing experience than the spread guys who got beat up for their lack of relevant passing experience THIS draft cycle. I can't see any of them succeeding in an NFL attack.

Renner... meh.

You left out everyone's favorite 2014 guy, David Fales.

Doesn't matter, Chiefs are going pick BPA and that player at our pick will happen to be a LG. When I say LG I mean best OT that will play LG for the Chiefs. They will say how versatile he is and can play any position on the line is why they like him.
