Of the many objets d’art in the Highland Park estate of Gene and Jerry Jones, one of the most precious is headed for a new home. The famous Preston Road Trophy now belongs to the family of the late Kansas City Chiefs founder Lamar Hunt.

In a curious geographical quirk, Lamar Hunt, owner of the Chiefs, and Jerry Jones, owner of the Dallas Cowboys, lived directly across Preston Road from each other until Lamar’s death in December 2006.

It was Lamar’s idea that whenever their two teams played each other, the winning owner would get a trophy—a rather shoddy trophy that Lamar created. “It’s made from railroad ties and magnets,” says his widow Norma Hunt. And it has bounced between the Jones home and the Hunt home for years.

Lamar’s son Clark Hunt is now chairman of the Chiefs and while he doesn’t live across the street from the Jones house, he does live about four blocks away, so the trophy will be close, should Jerry want to visit it.

Jerry can even borrow it, if he signs the contract that he himself wrote.

“One year, we were having a party at our house for the Chiefs,” says Norma. “At that time, the trophy was at Jerry’s house and Lamar asked if he could just borrow the trophy for the party.” Sure, he could, but first he’d have to sign the gag contract that Jerry sent over.

I live near Preston Road. I think it was formed from an old cattle trail that went from Texas to Kansas and Missouri.

There's actually a Lamar Hunt Middle school right near Preston Rd. in Frisco.
