8/3 Herm Q&A...
Q&A with HERM EDWARDS - 8/3
Aug 03, 2006, 12:22:43 PM Q: Why did you go in the stadium today? HERM EDWARDS: “Because we’re going to perform in the stadium tomorrow (in Minnesota) and it’s good to have that kind of atmosphere.” Q: Michael Bennett talked today about the pushing and shoving that goes on between teams working in that atmosphere. EDWARDS: “That always happens when somebody wants to give somebody the business. I think at the end of the day that is not what people see. Players don’t get graded on if you push another guy or hit a guy late; players get graded on how they perform on both sides of the football. I’m sure (Vikings head coach) Brad (Childress) has told his team what I’m going to tell my team: our conduct is very important. We have to understand when we go compete we still have to show good sportsmanship. Too many people are going to watch you practice and it would be a shame if all of a sudden you practice for two hours and 30 minutes and the only thing they show on ESPN is a fight. That’s embarrassing and it’s embarrassing to the league and the players. I don’t anticipate that. “I anticipate that we’re going to keep our poise. If you fight in practice you’re going to fight in the game. If you fight in the game two things are going to happen: you’re going to get kicked out of the game and it’s going to cost you a lot of money and that’s not good. It’s hard enough to keep players healthy; it would be a shame if a player loses his composure because those types of players I’m not going to let play a whole lot because they can’t handle it. That’s what happens on Sunday. You have to keep your composure and understand that. The great thing about our game is you have another opportunity to hit the guy fairly.” Q: What happens when emotion takes over, however, and emotions do take over? EDWARDS: “You keep your poise. That’s why you’re a professional. If you’re a professional you keep your poise.” Q: Is that what happened today, that they’re ready to hit other teams? EDWARDS: “Oh yeah, and it’s going to be a fast tempo. Once you hit the guy that’s it. You go to the whistle and you go to the next play. This is not a scrum or kick boxing, it’s football. You play within the framework of the game and the framework of the rules. You don’t take cheap shots on players; you don’t hit guys after the whistle to be a tough guy. That doesn’t make you a tough guy. That makes you a cheap shot guy. “You don’t play football like that. The history of football has never been taught that way. When things like that happen you’ve got an undisciplined football team and undisciplined football teams lose games in the fourth quarter because they self-destruct. All you’ve got to do is look at the teams that are always up there in the penalties and watch how they play. If you have poise you’re going to beat them. We’re not going to be a team like that. “Watch the teams that I’ve coached. Watch the teams that I coached. In the last five years the team I coached was the least penalized team in football.” Q: You said that Lional Dalton was going to have X-rays yesterday. How is his knee? EDWARDS: “He’s got a slight hamstring. He’s going to be fine. He won’t participate (vs. Minnesota) this weekend. It could be a couple of days or a week.” Q: What about Kyle Turley today? EDWARDS: “We gave him a rest and he needed it. There are some guys who are going to get it. I always watch guys. The Chiefs don’t play the Chiefs; they’re not on the schedule. You have to make sure players are rested and getting their work in, especially guys who have been in a lot of training camps. You don’t need to try and beat them up.” Q: Been a lot of talk about the change in philosophy and the emphasis on defense. EDWARDS: “It’s just because they hired a defensive head coach that everyone thinks it’s going to change the offense. I’m not trying to change the offense. I’m trying to get them to play together as a football team. There is a certain way you’ve got to play. There are going to be times where we’ve got a 10 point lead in the fourth quarter and there is six minutes left where we feel we’ve got to score 17 (points.) The defense has to go out there and stop them and the offense has to believe when we have that kind of lead we can run the ball and the game’s over. We don’t have to throw passes. We’ve got to play the clock a little better and protect each other. “That’s why we practice these things at practice. When we practice we practice all types of situations – every time we come to practice – it’s not just plays. I’ve told the players that. It’s situations, and these football players have to learn in certain situations in the game this is what we’re going to do and how we’re going to play. That’s probably the difference.” Q: You think it’s possible to have a great team without having a great defense? EDWARDS: “That happens about every 10 years. You look at all the playoff teams, their defenses are pretty good and help them win on the road. It’s always a little easier to win at home because of the crowd. You get momentum and guys are excited. But it’s very, very tough to win road games. We all know that. “You have to have a defense that can go in there and slow down an offense on the road because then you keep the game close and smart teams win close games. That’s what we’re going to try and do. We need to win games on the road. We can’t accept that every time that we play at home that teams’ are going to roll their helmets out there and not play us. But we have a great venue at home especially if you can get a lead.” Q: Do you have a sense when you’re going to get Junior Siavii back? EDWARDS: “No, he’s still on PUP (physically unable to perform). He’s getting better and it’s just a matter of when they let him go. He’s doing everything he can to get back. All those guys are. “We need some of those guys to get back because they’re missing a lot of reps, that’s the problem. How do you ever catch up? It’s a little bit different if you’re a young player than if you’re a veteran player. You miss a practice you don’t get that back. You don’t get the opportunity to get better.” http://www.kcchiefs.com/news/2006/08...m_edwards__83/ |

Yeah that's something that probably gets overlooked about Herm. Probably not surprising since he's a freak for discipline, but his teams don't usually have very many penalties. I'm really interested in seeing if that carries over with a new team.

Someone should Tell Herm to remind those cheap shot queens about that, as they've hurt a couple of Chiefs players in the past.
I'll be there. Hopefully its a good session and we get to see the Chiefs whipping their asses. I wish to see success for 2 vikings right now....Trich and Greenway. |

I don't think there will be a problem now that Mike Tice is gone. Brad Childress strikes me as a responsible guy.

So, sounds like we should still be winning games by 7 points, just subtract 20 points from each team's usual final score.

EDWARDS: “No, he’s still on PUP (physically unable to perform). He’s getting better and it’s just a matter of when they let him go. A freudian slip by Edwards perhaps??????
