Anyone have a DLP tv?

I am thinking about getting one. I have a DLP projector, and I love it, and so does the wife. However, in our new home, we don't have the theater set up yet so we were thinking about getting a big tv to hold us over. We like DLP technology and the image it produces, but it seems that the DLP tvs really have a problem with off axis viewing. Is this your experience if you've seen the DLP tvs? We don't have that problem with the projector, but that is a different beast entirely.

This is the TV we were thinking about:

We recently bought a Panasonic 50" DLP and I love it. Off axis from side-to-side is pretty good. There is some loss of PQ up and down of center though. Still, I don't regret buying this set at all.

Couple years ago I was visiting mom and dad out in Vegas and dad took me to a place called Fry's Electronics. Place was like a wal-mart sized electronic store. They had just about EVERYTHING you can imagine in home or business electronics. http://www.frys.com/

Got a Woody just walking in the front door!

Anyway they had a 65" Samsung Plazma DLP that had about the GREATEST pictures I have EVER SEEN. Cost over 20K back then but I could see where the extra $ was going!

If I had a chance to trade my 57" JVC HDTV for something like that I would in a heart beat... and that is saying allot cause my JVC has one of the greatest pictures I have seen on a projection HDTV. I have sold allot of different brands and between the JVC and the Hitachi projection HD's they are two of the BEST.

If you are just holding over till you get a home theatre then you my man are a Bastage. Yes I am green with envy.

Late last year, I was in the market for a new projection tv. I did a lot of reading and research, and decided I wanted one of the new technologies - LCD or DLP.

I spent a considerable amount of time looking at tv's - I watched both HDTV and standard def material, as well as bringing some of my own DVDs to watch. I went in thinking I would probably go DLP, but after many hours of demos, I decided to go LCD (Sony Grand Wega 55"). To me (and my wife), the picture on the LCD was better, and the Sony blew us away (much more so than other LCDs).

Additionally, I got away from a few issues with DLP sets that I was concerned about, specifically rainbows and audio sync issues. You should be aware of these things if you decide to go DLP. I've personally seen rainbows on a DLP projector, and was concerned about seeing them on the DLP RPTV. As for the audio sync issue, it's been fairly widely reported that there are sync issues between audio and video when using many non-progressive sources. This is most noticeable when playing video games, and has been a big complaint from console gamers with DLP sets.

The primary issue against LCDs is their display of black levels. While the Sony didn't quite have the black level of the latest DLPs, it was VERY close. It was close enough to me to be fairly negligible.

Having lived with this set for 6 months now, I have zero regrets, and wouldn't do it any differently if I could. I absolutely love it.

I'm not saying LCD is better than DLP for everyone, but for me, it is. It's a matter of personal taste, and you'll find a lot of very happy people on both sides of the fence. I would recommend auditioning as I did, and going with what looks best to you.

I've heard of the rainbow issue with DLP, but I've never seen one. We've had our set for about two months now.

I think the audio synch problem has been addressed in the latest generation of DLP chips. At least I've never had a problem with mine. However, I don't play console games on it either.

The wife and I aren't suseptable to rainbows, so that doesn't really concern me.

I really don't know about the audio sync issues; I've never had a problem with my projector (whcih is dlp) and audio problems, but then again, everything I send it is a progressive signal. Of course, I would send audio through my 5.1 system anyway so I really don't care what the speakers on the tv sound like.

I'm not into lcd displays; they just don't have the contrast that dlp displays can give you. DLP also gives you a much more filmlike experience. LCD would be ok if I only watched cartoons (I do like animated movies). Like you said, it is just a matter of personal preference.

My only real concern is off axis viewing (kids like relaxing on the floor and the wife likes to lay down on the couch). That is what is keeping me from pulling the trigger now.

I might consider the jvc H-Dila tv; they seem to have the best off axis viewing of any tv that I've seen.

Here is one columnists' opinion. I went with the Panny 50". No problems for 6 months. Paid $2,200 + $300 for extended warranty for 4 years that covers bulb replacement.

I got the Toshiba 44 DLP. It's pretty much made by LG. The LG one was a little wider and would not fit in the enterainment center. The TV is great and I love the DLP technology over the LCD.

That guy is comparing 50" DLPs with 22" LCDs; that is a total apples to oranges comparison. Size makes a huge difference on the technologies. Think about it; he had to shrink the LCD displays down to 22" before they would compare to the 50" DLPs.
