CBS NEWS: Hot Sauces Ranked By Heat

Hot sauces, ranked by heat:
http://www.cbsnews.com/pictures/hot-...d_id=61806652/

The listicle goes from one to twenty nine, even though they are listed as 1-30 with number 30 missing. Here are a few of my favorites from the list that I have tried and enjoyed over the years-other than that last one. I have never tried the stuff but I want to cook with it at some point, before I'm so old that it will kill me. The article has pics to jog your memory. Click on it to see them.

    • 26. Taco Bell Fire Sauce
    • This is the hottest sauce served in packets at the popular taco chain. It has 500 SHU... nowhere near the top of the scale.
    • Credit: Tacobell via Instagram
    • 24. Valentina Salsa Picante
    • Valentina Salsa is just starting to gain popularity in the United States, but it's the best-selling hot sauce in Mexico. It brings 900 SHU.
    • Credit: SalsaValentina via Facebook
    • 19. Valentina Salas Picanto - Extra Hot
    • Valentina's spicier version delivers 2,100 SHU — more than double the heat of its original.
    • Credit: SalsaValentina via Facebook
    • 18. Huy Fong Foods Sriracha Sauce
    • Sriracha creator David Tran said he set out to "make a rich man's sauce at a poor man's price."
    • The company has never advertised its products, but in 2010, Tran had to open a 650,000-square-foot facility to keep up with demand. Sriracha clocks in at 2,200 SHU.
    • Credit: Huyfongfoods via Instagram
    • 14. Tabasco Original Hot Sauce
    • The ubiquitous hot sauce has up to 5,000 SHU.
    • Credit: Tabasco via Instagram
    • 8. Dave’s Ultimate Insanity Hot Sauce
    • Dave's Gourmet recommends you use this sauce "one drop at a time." It boasts 250,000 SHU.
    • Credit: DavesGourmet via Facebook
    • 1. Blair’s 16 Million Reserve
    • The hottest hot sauce isn't really a sauce at all. It's packaged pure capsaicin crystals (the chemical compound that makes peppers hot), and is "not to be consumed or even opened without using extreme caution."
    • As the name suggests, it clocks in at 16,000,000 SHU.

I had a colleague from Pakistan who used to put Dave's Insanity on his shawermas. Went through a third of a bottle each sitting. Still don't know how he did it. I could barely tolerate any more than a drop the size of a pencil eraser. The heat lasts for 10 minutes, and reminds you the next day how stupid it was to eat it.

DaBomb made some good sauces.

My smoked then dried and burr ground Ghost Peppers will clear some space in the kitchen just by opening the jar. What a chef would call a pinch added to 8 servings of chili will increase beer drinking dramatically, perspiration levels too

I had a Mexican Beertender who said nothing is too hot, I gave her a damp finger dab of my Chocolate Habanaro seasoning and she put it on the middle of her tongue and handled it like a camper. You could tell it got to her but she handled it well.

When I told her I was being nice and had given her the mild version, she smelled the Ghost Pepper version but refused to taste, saying "Nope, no ****ing way."

Her other job was at a BBQ joint (not bad stuff for IN) and I had given her boss a sample and he had already stolen my thunder. She said it tore her up.

I have thought about cooking some into a sauce but can't find any volunteers. I wore a paint respirator in the garage to grind it. I still have 2 coffee containers full that need to be ground and there's no hurry.

The Source is a highly concentrated extract with pharma. grade Capsaicin, not a sauce at all, and in hot sauce challenges you must sign a release/ medical instruction forms. It will literally burn the skin. It has zero to do with taste buds.

To have someone actually put it directly on their tongue without "batting an eye" reminds me of a long running Penn and Teller series. I think you were spoofed or the drop fell off the plastic toothpick before it made it to her mouth... When I tried it I had ill effects while urinating later that night and I did a drop on one tang of a fork with food. I usually get that when a sprinkle mu Ghost Pepper dust on pizza liberally

I am guessing your son has video? Nobody gives anyone 7.1M Scoville unit hot sauce and doesn't film it.

This is my friend hot sauce shop that used to be in St Charles. He's a retired lawyer... now he's a retired storekeeper too.

Unfortunately no. In all honesty though, I was in the room and watched her. Nothing. Now, fast forward a couple of years later - her, my Son and my Grandson (24) took the "paqui" chip challenge and, while my Son and Grand Son were dying - she laughed the entire time. Didn't bother her in the least.

That crap isn't for me - I don't get the fascination with "hot" stuff...I mean, Cholula sauce is about my limit....I have been to original juan's a couple of times with my Son - shoot, just walking into the place makes my eyes water..

Good to see he has some Country Bobs in his store. It's a great steak/chop/fry/any sauce.

Yes, the place is a food processing plant to where the commodity is basically hot peppers. It used to be an auto parts distributor.
You should film that, stick it on you tube, If it's what you say she could have a blast blowing away pepperheads. Juan's would probably work something out with her. But seriously, get it on video. May I ask what made someone buy a $100 bottle ($137 at Juan's) of what is really just a pharmaceutical grade hot pepper extract? Then again how much were those chips each?

Juan's store is OK but check out my other post, the Figuero's had 3K different hot sauces including all 60 of the hottest.

The "Paqui chip challenge" was bought by my Son - $10 (two to a package) He had seen several you tube videos on it and wanted to try it out. The "Source" was given to us by friends. Hell, our Son used to buy "Da Bomb" and eat it with salsa and chips. He gets in to that crap. Like I said, not for me - no stomach for that stuff. But it is fun to watch them......

For store bought I like Malinda's black label.

The past couple years I've fermented red savina, ghost, orange habanero, Serrano, and reaper chilis.
The fermentation process cuts the heat and brings out the the flavor and aroma without the burn.
This year I picked up a pack of 7 pot seeds and have 9 plants in trays.
At some point I'll play with blending some peppers but that'll be down the road.

I live in Louisiana and can't stand Tabasco. It is too vinegary. I love Red Hot - it has the right balance for everyday use. The Dave’s Ultimate Insanity Hot Sauce is the shit! The first time I tried it was a splash in a gumbo. It was so hot I tossed it out. Funny thing is, after I got used to it I could cover the top of an omelet from Ihop with it like jelly on toast!

I put Louisiana Hot sauce on damn near everything. Hell, I pour it into a tablespoon and eat it by itself. The vinegar and cayenne together are super addictive to me. Second on that list for me is Sriracha. I put that on quite a bit too. It's great on any asian inspired dish, in chili, on a hot dog, etc. Damn, now I'm hungry
