My little foray into wealth last night.

Just had to mention this. I went to a business party last night, and it was at a very upscale condo, quite swanky and architecturally distinctive. I'm nosy, so I looked up the assessed value. It was about $1.7 million, which actually seems cheap for this place since it was very, very nice.

The furnishings didn't seem that livable, and I was curious who actually lived in the place. During a conversation, one of the hostesses told me. It was a family that has a mansion a couple of miles away, but they bought this condo just as a place to host parties.

Okay, got it. This is a $1.7 million private clubhouse. They bought a $1.7 million condo just to hold parties.

Then I got the tour.

It had a lot of art in it, and there was a piece upstairs over a couch by a particular artist that I recognized. He's a somewhat obscure artist, but I knew the name and I was thinking, "Wait a minute".

So when I got home I did a little searching. That painting - the exact painting that was over the couch - sold at auction a couple of years ago for $1.2 million.

That piece was about 36" x 48". And they had two more pieces by the same artist that were enormous. At the same auction where the small painting was sold, another painting by this artist sold for over $60 million, so there's a high end that's pretty high. And one of the big paintings looked suspiciously similar to another one that auctioned off for $20 million.

And that was the one artist that I'd heard of. There were two more pieces that the knowledgeable art people were oohing and aahing about that I suspect may have been similar in status.

And the thing is, I've never heard of the owners. It's some finance dude and his wife.

There's some serious money walking around in this world, and it's not just famous people. It's really kind of amazing to see what some people out there can afford to do. I really should have gone into finance as a career.

Anyone else ever wander into a display of wealth like this? Let's hear the stories.

My closest brush with wealth is even a bit more hard to grasp, even years later. Won't bore you if you already know the story.

Don't recall for sure. I've been doing work on a very nice house lately. Two Ferraris in the garage. It's a nice house but I don't think he has any million dollar paintings hanging on the walls.

No idea what it's like to be stinky rich but back in the heyday of IT I owned a 5 bedroom house that one bedroom stored my kayak, mountain bike and fly rods. Besides the room I slept in there could have been a vagrant living in the others for all I known for how much I visited them.

Give me a bed, office and couch and I'm happy. It becomes futile at some point IMHO.

Land for the dogs and a small ranch any day. It is fun to see the other side but hell if I want to keep it up.

I wonder how much it costs to insure a $20 million dollar sheet of oil covered paper.

Welcome to my house

Fortunately almost no one knows what they are looking at so it seems just odd eclectic junk to most. Nothing in the individual millions. I've been in some places with killer stuff. It's pretty unusual to see people with any sort of taste.

I was in Scott McNealy's house on the Pebble Beach golf course during the 100th US Open. I knew it was worth a ton of money. It was very nice but there was no obnoxious display of wealth. He did have a rocking wine collection and the food and drink at the party was all 1st class.

The only other time was when I flew business class and was put up in the penthouse at the Furama Hotel in Hong Kong back in 1995. I sent some clothes to be cleaned and everything come back with ribbons and boxes around them like they were brand new from a store, even my underwear and socks. The room service was incredible and I had a limo at my disposal.

I could take you to 3 ranches that were purchased for 65 million, 37 million, and 35 million.

The first ranch, the owners spend around 3 weeks out of the year there.

The second ranch, the owners spend 1 week a year there.

The third ranch, the owners haven't set a foot on the property. They viewed it from a helicopter and made an offer and haven't been back.

None of them are celebrities. They make me feel poor!
