Anyone here NOT like Gates bbq?
I have eaten in alot of places in KC, but their meat was really salty, the sauce was confusing, the people just yelled at my family pretty much, it was loud and dirty too. I had the short ribs, someone fill me in with what is good about the place. For comparison some places I like to eat

I don't dislike Gates. When I go there I enjoy my meal...however it isn't nearly as high on KC BBQ list for me as it is for most other people.

For me Arthur Bryant's is where it is at.

I usually can't stand Gates BBQ at all. I have never liked it. I grew up with Donnie Zarda, and the worked at Zarda's, so I am partial to Zarda's BBQ.

Having said that, one of our vendors at my job recently catered a meeting, and they brought Gates BBQ, and the ribs I had were excellent.

Gates sauce is sweet like you can get at any road side BBQ stand. They serve frozen crinkly french fries like fast food places. There are a lot of better places in KC.

Gates is very perplexing, because of the inconsistency of service. Sometimes I breeze in, line moves quick, food is perfect, wonderful world.

Other times the chick behind the counter has to ask me what I ordered three or four times, the fries are cold (I hate that) the beans are colder (I really hate that) and the ribs in the combo plate are a very end piece that is mostly gristle.

So, you never know what you're gonna get. The 12th and Brooklyn location seems to crank out the best food, 40 Highway in Independence is the most inconsistent.

Are you sure you're not thinking about Rosedale?
They serve crinkle cut fries. Gates does not.
Gates makes a sweet sauce, but it's not their flagship original. You can't call the original "sweet" because it really isn't.

gates had a vinegary tasting sauce, the whole thing was strange because even at the shit places i eat, it is pretty freaking good.
