Q&A with HERM EDWARDS - 10/5
Oct 05, 2006, 3:42:20 PM

Q: How much did Kyle Turley do today?

HERMAN EDWARDS: “Not much, not much at all. He did some stuff individually and really that was about it.”

Q: You don’t sound real optimistic for this week?

EDWARDS: “Nah, he’s out. He’s not going to participate.”

Q: How much of a concern is that now that Svitek is hurt?

EDWARDS: “The problem you have is when you run out of players it puts a strain on everybody else at practice. I think you sometimes lose sight of that: you’ve got to have enough players to practice with. Lional Dalton got the game ball because he was the scout team guard today, the left guard. I told him he’s a two-way player now.”

Q: Do you have any information on Scanlon and Svitek right now?

EDWARDS: “They’re going to be fine but right now they’re not going to participate this week. It’s nothing serious, it’s just strains and we’ve just got to wait. It’s week-to-week at this point for both those guys.”

Q: So if Jordan Black would go down, God forbid, who would….

EDWARDS: “It would be (Chris) Bober. There will be some new guys that will be up this week – some younger guys that are gonna have to be activated. We’re running out of players. Niswanger will probably be up and I would anticipate Ross probably being up. Probably even go in with five receivers.”

Q: How concerned are you with that left tackle position right now?

EDWARDS: “I’m not unless an injury happens and if it does then you’ve got to put in another guy. I thought Jordan did a good job but he’s going to get a big test this week. We’re playing on the road in a hostile environment, one of the end zones is very, very loud. So, both tackles will have a little stress on them especially if we fall behind or are in two minutes and have to throw the ball. We’re going to have to guard against that and try to understand when they bring pressure, because they can rush us with four (linemen). ”

Q: If you were still playing and trying to cover Tony Gonzalez in coverage how would you do it?

EDWARDS: “That’s tough. I had a similar task in practice every day covering Harold Carmichael (with Philadelphia Eagles). Harold is a little bit taller. He was 6'7". It’s tough because there are certain areas where they’re going to throw the ball and if they throw it correctly you’re not going to make the play. It’s almost like basketball where they wall you off. Tony’s that kind of guy – a big bodied guy who can adjust really well. He’s strong and if they throw the ball in certain areas and unless you can get around him it’s going to be complete.

“The thing that helps you the best in trying to guard those guys is try to get him at the line of scrimmage and slow him down or try and bracket him. If you leave him one-on-one with a linebacker he can win that battle generally.”

Q: Is it safe to say you were glad to see him here when you got here?

EDWARDS: “No doubt about it. Any time you can get a good tight end and you’re talking about one of the premier tight ends, not just a guy. He’s a guy who’s caught a lot of balls in his career, Pro Bowl player.”

Q: When you talk about winning on the road the home field advantage seems to exist in every sport. Generally speaking is it a matter of the home team playing close to its capacity or the road team having great difficulty playing up to its capacity?

EDWARDS: “One thing you do know if you’re the road team is if you don’t get off to fast start and you let the game become two scores you’re in trouble. As the thing gets going the fans feed off that energy and all of a sudden field position becomes a big part of it and it’s always hard on offenses because they obviously have to deal with the crowd noise.

“Defensively, it’s a little bit different. That’s why if you can generate a lead early and are at home you know that eventually it’s going to make it hard on that (opponent) – it’s just a matter of time. Now, some teams are great road teams. I always say that’s the quarterback – always the quarterback. they’ve got that mentality.

“When it becomes a two-score game you know it. You can just kind of feel it because of a sudden you’ve got to go back and pass, you’ve got to catch up eventually. That never bodes good. Now, if you can play ala like we did in Denver you take the crowd out of the game, keep the offensive power out of it by not allowing them to make big plays, the fans get out of the game and it becomes an even playing field. If you can just keep it like that for a while the whole mindset is at the end you may steal a game on the road if it’s close.

“Sometimes you get a blowout because you may be that much better than the other team or the team turns it over to you. Without those two things happening it’s much more difficult to win on the road. You’re in the hotel; they’re at home; you’ve got to get on the airplane, all those little things that can become a nuisance if you let it bother you. For some teams they like going on the road when they’re mentally tough because then it’s just about them.

“The one thing I do know about the road is if you go on the road and you can handle it in a manner that you don’t have to worry about who’s coming to the game ‘cause you don’t have to worry about tickets. At home it’s a nuisance because you’ve got everybody coming: your grandmother’s coming, your uncle’s coming, your brother-in-law that you don’t like is coming. You’ve got deal with that madness all week. People come to your house and it all becomes a hassle.

“But if you get down on the road you’re going up the wrong hill.”

Q: You said maybe you’re going to dress five receivers maybe.

EDWARDS: “Basically we don’t have enough guys left. That’s it. We don’t really have enough. We generally dress 22 defensive players and I don’t think we have 22 available at this point. I think it’s only 21. But we’re not going to say this is what it is yet. Then it becomes a special teams’ situation: it affects your special teams and who the gunner is, who’s the R3, that’s what you’re dealing with.”

Q: More injuries than usual at this time?

EDWARDS: “Nah, but when you get two on the same day you don’t anticipate that. That’s sort of right out of the box. But you have to live with it. It happened to us early, hopefully, it doesn’t continue.”

Q: But Svitek and Scanlon won’t need surgery?

EDWARDS: “No, not at all.”

Q: What’s Rod Gardner given you in practice?

EDWARDS: “Big physical guy and we tried to get him one (reception) last week against San Francisco. I think he’s a guy who can make plays; a guy down the field vertically who can adjust to the ball very well. We’ll see. He’s into football and wants to play. So, that’s good.”

Q: What does Damon Huard have to continue to do to be successful?

EDWARDS: “You can’t turn the ball over. You’ve got no shot. You turn the ball over on the road it’s over. You’re not going to win. You’ve got to protect the football. He’s going to have to do that. He’s going to have to make some throws and going to have to avoid some guys when they’re rushing us. He’s going to have to play similar to how he played last week (vs. San Francisco). If he can do that we have a great chance.”

Q: Do you see a difference in his confidence?

EDWARDS: “Absolutely. I think that game helped him and helped his psyche and helped the players around him who feel that he’s going to be fine and all we need to do is our job.”

VARSITY
I bet Roaf would come back if we'd let him play a little QB during garbage time.

Herm is really uptight about turnovers. If we dump one on the ground this week he's going to get conservative again.

He didn't catch it. Even so, your logic is rediculous. You can't blame a receiver when balls aren't thrown his way.
