I worked on the trading floor at the KC Board of Trade for 14 years or so. Worked for the exchange itself most of that time, tried a little floor trading as well (where you 'day trade' on the spot and 'provide liquidity'). It's an interesting gig, but it'll age a guy before his time if he's not careful. My favorite parable is this: If you want to make a small fortune trading stocks or commodities...start with a large fortune.

Unless you have a really complex algorithm that's tied into a market you are fish bait.

I play a bit as basically, a hobbyist. Unless you live and breathe it and understand the markets in a way that armchair traders don't, I doubt you will get anywhere. For most people it's basically just gambling. A fun diversion, but I wouldn't fool yourself into thinking you will make yourself rich. You've just as good a chance to get rich betting on football games.
