Flanagan: Royals still looking to add more cable TV outlets

Royals still looking to add more cable TV outlets

The Royals keep winning, and excitement about the team continues to mount.

But if you don't subscribe to Time Warner, Everest or Unite cable systems, you're still out of luck catching the majority of the games on television.

According to Royals vice president of broadcasting services Dave Witty, talks are continuing with major cable outlets such as Comcast and Cox, as well as satellite provider Dish Network.

"We're still confident something will get done soon," Witty said. "Comcast and the Royals both want to get a deal done and they've been good people to work with. So we're hoping it will happen soon."

At least locally, Comcast would be a crucial addition for the Royals Sports Television Network. Comcast reaches more than 100,000 households in the Kansas City area, second only to Time Warner, which reaches about 280,000.

"Comcast continues to negotiate with the Royals in an attempt to offer our customers Royals baseball at a fair and reasonable price," said Tom Krewson, manager of public affairs for Comcast.

"We want to reassure our customers that these negotiations will continue even though the season is under way. There is no deadline for reaching an agreement. Negotiations will continue."

Cox would be the next major cable outlet to nab. It reaches more than one million homes in the six-state area surrounding the Royals, and serves Wichita and Omaha, where the Royals have minor-league affiliates.

The news isn't so good for DirecTV subscribers. Talks broke off with that satellite provider weeks ago. Also, Sunflower Cable, which serves Lawrence, already has told the Royals, according to Witty, that it isn't interested in picking up the RSTN this season.

The Royals are continuing talks with St. Joseph's Cable, and Witty said those negotiations have been encouraging.
