Geno Smith, why are people down on him

So I didn't get to see every single game that he played this year but did see most.

He not only seems to have all of the athleticism that you could want in a quarterback but also all of the intangibles in terms of leadership.

On the radio both stations keep talking about him not being in the same class as luck or RGIII , my question is why not???

Here is my reasoning: We all know what type of difference a good coaching staff makes and how it transitions to the players ae. matt cassel with charlie weis

WVA coaching staff is not very good, their offensive line was like Swiss cheese and their defense was possibly the bottom 5% in all of Division I football, putting him consistently in bad situations.

If he had been playing for Alabama, Florida, ND, etc etc people would be touting him like luck or RGIII

I didn't see anything this year from him that would make someone believe that he doesn’t have all of the tools to be an elite QB.

Just on the wrong college team to put his draft stock at #1

Watch, the CHiefs will beat the Colts, and the Jags will get the #1 pick.

They experts will then say "Jags need a QB, Geno Smith is the pick"

Yeah. I can see it now.

"Blaine Gabbert just isn't good and the Jags need to draft a guy like Geno Smith"

"Kansas City needs to trade for Sanchez or Alex Smith and draft a lineman to protect them so that they can succeed."

The sad part is that this shitty organization has done this method of QB selecting for the last 30 years, so it's come to be expected by the media. So really the Chiefs are the ones to blame. We need a new GM/HC who is a risk taker to change the perception of this franchise.

I understand you can't compare one person to another but even as a prospect Luck had a lot of 1st round talent around him. two of his offensive linemen were 1st round draft picks, his tight end was a early second round pick.

And their defense was very good.

So Luck had a much better surrounding cast, linemen, recievers and a much better defense and his stats were

2011 Luck: Comp: 71.3% 3517 yards 37 TD's 10INT 169.68 rating

2012 Geno: Com;: 71.4% 4004 yards 40 TD's 6 INT 164.6 rating

Look I'm not saying he is better but Luck had a huge hype machine and had a dad who was in the NFL.

But what about Smith makes him less coming out? Stats were just as good or better with less talent, very smart and a great leader?

You can't help but think there race has something to do with it in some way.

Nah, the Jags need Tebow. They've got to create more storylines to talk about him.

Naw, look at all the over hype that RG3 gets. It's not a racial issue.

It's because he played for WV. If you can remember back to the WV vs Texas game this year, Geno was getting tons of Hype... was the surefire Heisman winner and already getting deemed as the next RG3 type #1 overall draftpick.

As soon as WV lost to TT and K-State, his hype took a HUGE slide.

Whats sad is that Geno did not even play BAD in those games. He still had decent to good games statically and using the Eye-test, but the WV defense just sucks soooo much ass that Geno was not allowed to have a stalling drive. WV has very good WR's, but in that TT game you will see passes go through hands, WR's not where they are supposed to be, and a VERY GOOD defensive gameplan by the Red Raiders.

WV runs a lot of WR screens and TT was catching it nearly everytime. Then when WV got down by a few scores they started going deep and TT adjusted and started defending the deep pass. Just smart football by TT and Kstate, those losses were NOT on Geno, but his hype took a ton of the blame. It's just how the media works.

I argued this in the other thread a few days ago. I think it is a racial issue, albeit maybe not a conscious one, and I don't think it's the deciding factor. I also think there's some revisionist history going on with RG3. There was a lot of debate over what his draft position should be a year ago, and there were a lot of (incorrect) assumptions made about his athletic ability versus his intelligence and pocket awareness. Questions that do also get made about some white players, but never by default the way that it seems to be with black qbs. A black quarterback is always a runner first. Even if he's not. And there are always questions about his ability to operate an offense and execute the passing game. You saw that with RG3, despite how he progressed over his time at Baylor, and you see it now with Smith, despite how he's played over the course of his entire career at WVU. The one benefit that Griffin had that Smith does not was his parents, and, as the story goes, how being raised by a pair of soldiers impacted his character. Otherwise, I think there's a startling parallel between the two, both in terms of how they were judged by draft prognosticators at this stage of the game, and in terms of the careers that they had, starting with the schools that they attended and carrying out through the numbers they produced.

I'm not saying race is the only factor. I don't believe that. But I do think it's a factor, and one that people may not even recognize in themselves. I do agree that the fact that he attended West Virginia was a mark against him, and I do recognize that the performance of the team itself has had a detrimental impact on how he's viewed nationally. If he's on a 9-3 team he would've been in the Heisman discussion and probably less of a perceived "reach" at 1. But I also think you'd have seen the same questions about him, just like they were with Griffin a year ago. And I have to think that ethnicity plays some part in that.

I haven't had the opportunity to watch him much this year but from the highlights I've seen and the few times I have seen him play, I'd say he's the BPA for the #1 overall pick. I'd like to see KC pick him up and get a decent vet via FA so the kid can sit a year.

Another pov would be that KC fans are so desperate for a good QB that this guy could be another Akili Smith and they wouldn't give a **** as long as the squad at least tried to pick a QB in the 1st.

Personally, I think Geno will be damn good and if KC doesn't pick him, I'll give up.
