Branden Albert trade won’t happen unless he lowers his price

Branden Albert trade won’t happen unless he lowers his price

Branden Albert AP

The much-discussed potential trade of Branden Albert from the Chiefs to the Dolphins doesn’t appear likely at the price Albert is currently seeking.

Although the Chiefs and Dolphins can probably agree on compensation — the Dolphins sending a second-round pick to Kansas City — the hangup is that Albert wants the kind of money that the Dolphins aren’t willing to spend. Specifically, according to Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports, Albert wants between $8 million and $9 million a year on a long-term deal.

In other words, Albert is looking for the same kind of contract that left tackle Jake Long got from the Rams — the very contract the Dolphins wouldn’t give Long, which is why he left Miami for St. Louis.

If the Dolphins weren’t willing to pay Long that kind of money, it’s hard to see why they’d be willing to give up a second-round draft pick for the privilege of paying Albert that kind of money. So the Dolphins may need to look elsewhere for a left tackle. And Albert may have to settle for playing this season for the Chiefs, making $9.8 million, and hitting free agency next year.

Alex doesn't need to have 30 TDs in the regular season. We have an all world electric running back that can hit a home run anytime he touches it to make up for some of Alex's deficiencies. Alex just needs to make plays when it counts.

Or what?

The irony of the "GENO!!!!" crowd is that Alex Smith is a 1.1, and the Geno people are insisting he's not good enough, so the team needs to take a QB at 1.1. Let's try a little more reality here. Between the last "generational" QB prospect (P. Manning) and the most recent "generational" QB prospect (A. Luck), here are the QBs taken at 1.1:

Tim Couch
Michael Vick
David Carr
Carson Palmer
Eli Manning
Alex Smith
JaMarcus Russell
Matthew Stafford
Sam Bradford
Cam Newton

That's not exactly a murderer's row of QBs.

Do you guys not remember who our current coach is?

But I don't thinks it's where it was a few eyars ago where you basically had to have "the Guy" at QB.
Yeah, if everyone's special, then nobody's special. It's similar to the old axiom on starting goaltenders - if you think you have 2 starting goalies, you probably have none.

You either need a great QB as a force multiplier or a decent QB where you're just flat better everywhere else.

Because look at who you're chasing right now. The 49ers ARE great everywhere and very well could have that force multiplying QB. That's your rabbit - good luck catching him with the 14th best QB in the league and lateral movements on key positions for a 2-14 squad.

Obviously you can hope for the "any given Sunday" thing to happen and you just flat play better than your opponent on that weekend....for 4 consecutive weekends. I guess that could happen.

But I wouldn't count on it.

This team needs a HR swing to make the leap and Alex Smith/Eric Fisher is not a HR swing. Mike DeVito is not a HR swing. Even guys like Avery and Smith - who I like aren't true HR swings. Those are the supplemental parts that you use to fill around your developing football team.

But we've traded a high value 2nd rounder and are now seemingly content with moving sideways with 1.1 - that's just not going to work.

"More upside potentially" is exactly the problem. They have more upside potentially than a guy drafted 15 spots later at a time when the position was still overvalued in the draft. It's not like we're talking about Orlando Pace here. You've got to really try hard to rationalize the value of this kind of player at #1.

I'm basing all of my arguments on a few key reports:

1) The Chiefs scouts and Coach Reid like Geno Smith. These are from rumblings posted from various sources

2) The Bad Guy's source told us that the Chiefs a few days ago had it narrowed down to four players: Luke Joeckel, Eric Fisher, Dion Jordan, and Geno Smith

That's good enough for me to know that the Chiefs actually do think Geno Smith can be a good QB, and that they would love to have him on their football team. It also stands to reason that even if Geno Smith isn't the best player on their big board, if the Chiefs were able to trade down to #4 and the previous picks before them went Joeckel, Fisher, Jordan, that Geno Smith would have to be the pick right there. If he weren't, then John Dorsey's draft philosophy that he has been espousing since he got here is completely full of shit, and he's probably just flying by the seat of his pants like all the other GMs in their war rooms.

The Chiefs clearly think Geno Smith is ONE answer. I happen to think it's the best answer to the QB situation given what a fantastic position he could be in as a student and mentoree.

Also, I'll get over the QB thing when this team starts to give a **** about its fans and tries to actually win something valuable.
I'm not stuck on anything. You're the one who's stuck. You're so far up Geno's ass that you probably can taste his food before he does. It's got you ignoring pretty much all rational thought.

If he's wanting to be paid that much, it's not my money so I don't care, but if it's causing them not to be able to re up Houston or Berry etc, move on.
it would be my 1st choice either but i imagine the Chiefs would of preferred to keep all their good players if they could.

Bowe,Albert,Carr etc

I believe there has to be a reason when they can't ... they didn't just say 'screw it'

No, Alex Smith was a 1.1. Seven years ago. And many people at the time argued against that. Which is really irrelevant, because what Alex Smith is is a middle-of-the-pack journeyman that we just overpaid for. If we want to talk current draft value vernacular, he's at best a 2.2.

Not everyone on here is of the belief that Andy Reid walks on water.

He drafted Donovan McNabb. McNabb never got them to the promise land because they were a very, very pass happy team. What besides a couple of other average at best quarter backs are on his resume?

I don't get it, he is going to have to show me. So far they have done exactly what the Chiefs have been doing for 30 years, trade a high pick for some other teams failure. The same thing that Pioli did as his first move.

Eh, I'm not real hungup on Devito. They made moves to fill holes. I still think they obviously believe the draft is the place to find the stars.

Based on what i've gathered, they think the star power is pretty much here, but has underperformed. I think they feel the developing football pillars are here and they seem to be thinking Joeckel or Fisher can be a pillar.

If we do draft either of them at 1, they better be.

I'm probably more excited about Alex Smith than anyone here, but I think he's vastly underrated.

No way in hell does Alex Smith get 30 touchdowns. If he gets 24 it will be lucky as hell. History says he wont play 16 games for one. Also his history of throwing is not that good.

I see Alex Smith's ceiling in an aggressive pass attack as 2004 Jake Plummer.

Better to dial it back a bit and get 2005 Jake Plummer.

So, rather than deal with the facts of the discussion, you're going to go there, even though I've said that they should take the QB if they think he's the answer? Well, that sort of makes the point about the "GENO!!!!" crowd, I guess.
