Q&A Dick Vermeil (8/26)...Bell doubtful.

Q&A with DICK VERMEIL
Aug 26, 2005, 2:21:09 PM

Q: Have you put together your list of guys who won’t play tomorrow night?

DICK VERMEIL: “Dante (Hall) won’t play. John Welbourn is very questionable, still has a stiff neck. Jerome Woods will play; Kendrell Bell is doubtful.”

Q: You said yesterday that if it was the regular season Dante Hall would play; would you say that about Kendrell Bell if it was the regular season?

VERMEIL: “I would think so. That’s what we brought him here to do.”

Q: Do you expect him to be ready?

VERMEIL: “I do expect him to be.”

Q: How concerned are you with so many guys who haven’t been able to take advantage of a full workout in pre-season?

VERMEIL: “There has been a number but, fortunate for us, most of it has been in backup positions and not many starters. Sampson has missed some work but he got a lot of work prior to that first pre-season game, so once he’s healthy he could come back in and pick right up where he left off.

“We lost Robert Holcombe who we counted on being a fullback and a running back. Those things have hurt it, but overall we’ve been fortunate. The guys who have missed time are back like Carlos Hall and Junior Siavii. But they were not slated as starters.”

Q: With the third pre-season game and starters maybe going into the third quarter, what are you looking for?

VERMEIL: “I think you look for everything. The first thing you look for is consistency and improvement: individual improvement, backup players who step up and play better, somebody to play well enough not to be one of the 15 guys cut on Tuesday, or someone who it’s glaring he can’t play.

“The big thing is to see us do a little better job of meeting expectations, do a good job in all the fundamental things.”

Q: Do you put more stock in the third pre-season game as far as preparation or the fourth?

VERMEIL: “I put more stock in the third game because we play our starters a little bit more. That’s just for stamina and getting used to play more reps and getting ready when there are 15 fewer players on the practice field next week.”

Q: Will Saturday really make a difference for some players?

VERMEIL: “I think it will. It’ll make a difference. We have some very tight competition at wide receiver, linebacker, a few spots on the offensive line, safeties. We’ve got to make some decisions. It’s good but a little more intense than any year since I’ve been here. We’re going to try and play as many guys as we can and still play well. We’re more capable of playing pretty good when we have our starters out there. We have them, especially since last week when we had 24 guys not suited up. This week we only have 11 (injured) listed as out. It’ll help us especially on defense to play a little better.”

Q: If Kendrell Bell doesn’t get time with the veterans this week and the fourth game the veterans aren’t going to play a lot, how prepared can he be for the regular season?

VERMEIL: “He won’t be what he ought to be, or what we brought him here to be. But I think we can get him started. We control how many reps he plays next week. He can play more than the rest of the guys. Our best next week will probably play 20-25 snaps. He can play more to get going and he can do more on the practice field. But I’m not the doctors.”

Q: Does he want to play or is it the doctors’ decision?

VERMEIL: “I think they’re being extra cautious because it’s a combination of his mindset and the doctors and trainers together. It’ll end up being the smartest thing to do, it’s just that sometimes we’re so anxious. You can see all the athleticism and the ability to recognize and explode into a play. You can see that without pads on, but you’d like to see the end result, too.”

Q: With a player like Robert Holcombe who you know what he can do, are you inclined to keep a roster spot for him in the hopes he can come back from that injury, or is it that you can’t afford to?

VERMEIL: “It’s tough to afford that luxury because that would only give us one fullback. It’s not easy to predict when that knee is going to be ready to go. So that makes it very tough. We brought him here to be a fullback and a running back. I know he can help us but it makes it very tough.”

Q: Do you feel better about your kicker today than you did Monday?

VERMEIL: “Yeah, I do. I know he’s a good kicker. Every kicker I’ve ever had has gone through it. I think it’s a Vermeil disease. I’ve had ‘em Super Bowl years and playoff years. He not a flake, so there’s stability within his personality and he’s tough. If you can find a fundamental error you can correct it. It’s just like correcting your golf swing. All of a sudden you lose something in it and someone’s got to tell you where it is. I think it is in his plant foot and he feels it is in his plant foot. In a full kicking session this week he was 17-for-17. His goal this week is not to miss a field goal.”

Q: Were you hesitant to say anything to him knowing how you are with kickers?

VERMEIL: “Yea. My wife always tells me to stay away from them. She’s been around me long enough. I just felt the best approach was the approach I took.

Too bad it is DV's last year. We could rename Training Camp to Summer Camp.

I was hoping for some good news today regarding Bell. I guess not. Hopefully he can have a full week of practice next week, and play an entire half of football during the last week of Preseason.

More than Bell being ready, I really wish Gun would get Fujita ready to play Bell's position. I've never liked Key Fox, and I'm not too anxious to see how an undrafted rookie does when the "real" lights turn on against the Jets.

DV is blowing smoke up everyone's ass on Bell. They don't want to admit they signed a broken LB. Or tell anyone what the real problem is.

I think Griffin is a good prospect. I have a lot better feeling on him then I did after the Vikes game. But I don't think he's ready to start a real game yet. I've seen quite a few flaws in his game, and that's to be expected.

When it comes down to it, I hope Fox starts before Griffin if they don't have enough foresight to see that Fujita is the best option.
