Tom Petty RIP

Apparently he had a massive heart attack. Bad news day.

Same here. I always dug his music but never saw him in my younger days when I went to damn near every concert that came around.

My wife and I finally saw him a few years ago at Sandstone or whatever they were calling it at the time. Great show.

At least most other things are going well. Otherwise--today sucks.
We will miss you Tom Petty.

You have no idea. I was up front in a private box for free. My buddy got the tickets through a friend who works at the Hollywood Bowl.

He was amazing. We were close enough to make eye contact. He was back home, in Hollywood. He was playing with so much love and joy.

And you looked at the band, and you realized... these are the same guys. They don't have the bullshit 12 piece rhythm section they've picked up along the way. With all the young guys playing 5 guitars to drown the actual music in just a wall of sound.

It was Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. 40 years strong. Playing their songs, the way they were written and recorded, perfectly.

But still, you could tell... the years were stacking up. His voice was clear and strong. The notes were all just nailed. Energy and enthusiasm. But you could see it... creeping behind him. Time. Miles of wear.

My friend - the one who gave me the ticket - said this morning "Man... I'm gonna be sad when Tom Petty dies."

Four hours later, he did.

So ****ing weird.

Reports now are that he's "clinging to life." The LAPD says on Twitter they erroneously confirmed his death earlier.
