I like bethesda games, i just hate their combat. Always clunky as hell.

Bioware writes some good stuff, and a lot of cheese to go along with it. I like their games but would like a more open world and a spacebar that wasn't trying to do so many things at once.

Far Cry 3 has a lot of elements of a game like skyrim with some assassins creed thrown in with good FPS combat. It's why I am still up at 3 a.m. Beautiful game, too. Huge open world that looks amazing. The story is pretty good so far, too.

And yeah, I still have several games from steam's winter sale that I haven't touched yet.

Apparently Far Cry 3 is Skyrim with guns.

Gonna have to check that out when I build my next box.

You should grab Just Cause 2. On steam for $2.99 right now which is too cheap to pass up. And it has a huge open world and some great gameplay. Everything in the game is over the top. From shooting your grappling hook and helicopters and reeling in and taking them over to the story, which is fun, but full of cheezy characters and cliches.

I cannot recommend that game highly enough at $2.99.

It's less about combat mechanics and loot, although they are still a key part of things. It's like being part of something, part of a story. Whereas Bethesda games aren't like that at all. Generally for me it's "tedious time sink" where other folks see gameplay, and I never really feel like I'm a character, the hero, rather just more of a guy sitting at a chair at home trying to raise my avatar's stats by angling my character in a corner of the mage guild basement while I tape my spacebar down to raise an athletic skill while I sleep (I literally did this in Morrowind ). It's a grind.

Different strokes for different folks.

That's the world we live in. It's like 15 million people watching American Idol while 400 thousand watch The Wire. I happen to think The Wire is a far better thing to watch, but I'm in the minority.
I just replayed Baldur's Gate 2 (off of GoG.com) and loved it all over again. Still one of the greatest RPG's you can play. If the encahced edition of BG1 goes up for sale on steam, I am going to pick it up.

/I love Skyrim too

System Shock 2 is less than 3 dollars right now. I'm picking it that game up. Again.

Not even close. I bought it thinking this. Wish I hadn't.

I did download Tomb Raider yesterday. Still engrossed in my latest go-around with Skyrim, but I'll give it a look at some point.

I like Far Cry 3 better than Skyrim. And there are plenty of similarities, but it isn't exactly Skyrim with guns.

Skyrim with guns would be Fallout 3, which was a great game, but again with the clunky combat from bethesda. Let me stop and look at my wrist and tab through a bunch of menus ever time I want to do anything, including kill something.

The story itself is more linear in FarCry 3, but there is a ton to do off mission, and I like the combat better.

You're going to be disappointed if you get into Far Cry 3 with that thought process.

It sort of is though. World/wise it is very smilar, obviously with some caveats, but it does have the same world feel.

The only real similarity is that they give you 3 islands you can free roam on. Comparing that game to Skyrim is a slap in the face to Bethesda.

That's pretty cool, though. Are the islands devoid of story/interesting NPCs/side quests?

There are no interesting sidequests because there's nothing interesting on the islands. The sidequests consist of hunting challenges or killing the same bad guys over and over. There are the "get from point A to point B on this vehicles under X amount of time challenges" too. The main story is pretty cool, though. It's a good, fun game, that's for sure, but it just doesn't compare to Skyrim.
