Game of Thrones *Spoiler* Thread

There's been some recent confusion with the old spoiler thread, so I'm kicking off a new one for tonight's premiere. This is going to be the one for folks who've read all the books. So anything anybody might want to talk about is in bounds. Suffice to say, if you haven't read the books, you'll probably want to stay out of here until you do...

I'll bump the old spoiler-free thread shortly in case anybody's interested. For future reference the link to that one is here

If it was Night King, then this is the only mention in the book I could find: http://awoiaf.westeros.org/index.php/Night%27s_King

They didn't mention by name in the episode. You only see him stride up in silence with 12 others [small o] behind him in a line. But it's confirmed on HBO's synopsis page.

Great episode right up until the point that Bran appeared. Basically shit from that point on. I get wanting cool fantasy imagery, but the stuff with the Others was just too cliché.

Not sure how I feel about Arya stabbing the Hound next week, either, but it also looks like she maybe doesn't penetrate his armor. But he has to get his stomach wound somehow. Maybe that (video) cut was just to tease book readers.

I enjoyed the WW scene, left me intrigued. I need to rewatch it. I don't want to see too many book reveals on the show, but GRRM has had plenty of time (and thousands of pages) to give us more on the white walkers, but he never has, so I don;t mid getting a little info on them from the show.

I think having Bronn train Jaime to fight lefty was a stroke of genius, Bronn on the show is a great character, far better than he was in the books. When he slapped Jaime with his golden hand, that was pretty damn funny.

The white walker scene didn't bother me that much, it was having Bran captured at Craster's Keep that really bugged me. I don't mind them taking detours from the book at all, some of the things they've done make it better for TV (like Bronn, and I think Locke's getting interesting too) but that was just bad.

As far as the white walkers go somebody on some blog I read somewhere last night mentioned how that thematically ties to the beginning of the episode (Missendei and Gray Worm talking about how they were taken as children). I do wonder if the appearance of the Night's King last night (if that's truly who he was) was actually a spoiler for The Winds of Winter.

The other thing that bugged me last night was the explicit reveal of Littlefinger and the Queen of Thorns re: Joffrey's death. I thought the show had done it perfectly last week, giving just enough clues but still leaving it vague enough that people had to think a little about it. And then they come out and beat us over the head with it. But that was more of a minor gripe than the sequence with Bran.

Not a good episode at all. I guess they all can't be winners.

Problem is Bran has nothing to do to get him through the season. "Trudge through snow while hungry" is not good TV, and viewers were already complaining about last season's Bran story which was repetitive and uninteresting. I don;t mind them spicing it up a bit like they did with Dany in season 2 and her dragons getting stolen.

I wasn't bothered by the Littlefinger reveal, it followed pretty closely to the books because he tells Sansa that stuff on the boat in the book as well so you know it was the Queen of Thorns. For a viewing audience, if you assume they haven't read the books and assume they are of average intelligence, you need to be a lot more explicit to make sure people get it. I think they let the mystery of who killed Joffrey go on long enough.

They resolved the mystery more than enough last week. This series has never treated the audience like they're morons. It's one of the good things about it.

Anyway, as I said last night, was only a minor gripe.

I don't mind expanding on Bran's story. I mind that their expansion on Bran's story was stupid.

It was only 5 minutes however. I thought the rest of the episode was fantastic.

They didn't resolve the mystery last week at all though. Only book readers would have had any clue who did it until Littlefinger revealed it to Sansa this week. Now they did get heavy handed by having Olenna come right out and tell Margery, having LF talk about his new friends and then fading into Margery and Olenna was enough. I guess having Olenna tell her outright just establishes that Margery had nothing to do with the plot to kill Joffrey, it was all LF and Lady Olenna.

As for Bran, yeah, I agree his new story on the show has a lot of holes in it, and John's does as well. They are completely redoing the whole North part of the story, hopefully they will at least keep it entertaining even if it doesn't all make perfect sense.

I agree that Bran doesn't have a lot to do this season so getting captured was okay by me. Audience pleaser. Same with Bronn training Jamie. As long as Bran doesn't have some life altering event while captured, I'm cool with the departure.

The hound not being injured and the white walkers taking the babies are big departures.

I'm assuming the white walkers finally get their due in the new book. Why spoil the book readers?

Maybe I'm being blonde, but when did Jon and Sam become aware that Brann et al were alive and North of The Wall?
