My wife and I watched part of that show last week the and we thought it was pretty dumb. It's like a "gotcha" kind of show if you keep the money. It feels like propaganda for wealth redistribution.

I'd take all of the money for myself and find an appropriate charity before giving it to either of the people they had on there (especially the disabled vet guy - they seemed to be squandering their money).

Maybe they had more appropriate contestants on this week.

I don't think he's being a dick. This show looks really disingenuous. It pits several poor couples against each other and exploits their financial struggles into some twisted competition involving fake selflessness. And they use even more exploitative methods beneath that. Like surprise, one of the poor couples are midgets... ohhh!.... how much do you feel sorry for them now, huh? Let's make the midgets cry about money and see if the other couple feels sorry enough for them to share some money, people will just soak that shit up....

I recently heard at my local hardware store some grumblings about the show: seems a local family made the cut but, although the house looked fab on camera, in fact it was unfinished. And what was finished was shoddily constructed: After the show, the crews left things only as far as they got. This was anecdotal, but according to today's Wall Street Journal, it's the reality for a lot of participants.

But after the cameras have gone, another trend has been developing: Homeowners struggle to keep up with their expensive new digs. In many cases, the bigger, more lavish homes have come with bigger, more lavish utility bills. And bigger tax assessments. Some homeowners have tapped the equity of their super-sized homes only to fall behind on the higher mortgage payments.

After all, it's not like the families have received a windfall along with the digs, and there's no tax exemption for being feel-good. Adds the article, "The show's producers say they are aware of the problem and are making changes appropriate to current economic reality: downsizing." Which, presumably, leaves those prior chosen families SOL, and is surely cold comfort for the family whose dream home — which, after all, provides not just shelter but ready-made collateral for the recipients — is now facing foreclosure.

I thought last night was an interesting show. One couple was a married lesbian couple from Boston, the other were, in their own words, God fearing, gun toting, Republicans from Texas. In the end, the Boston couple gave away $99,600 from their briefcase and got $25K from the Texas couple.

All I could think at the end is that I hope the Texas couple felt thoroughly humiliated by the generosity shown by the other couple.

Could this show be more contrived? Cheesy as ****.

The Redneck family and the Lesbian-biracial family? That wasn't deliberately set up at all.

$100 for each of them and for the two boys they are helping raise. They decided that the Texas family needed it more.
