Regrets at Arrowhead?

Umm...no... not so much on this one.

Printers savours 2nd chance

A changed man, quarterback ready to lead Lions again as CFL training camp gets into gear.bb

It’s not Casey Printers’ team.

Except that it is very much Printers’ team.

The resurrected B.C. Lions quarterback will tell you the former. Wary of his reputation as a me-first player, one forged during his first go-round with the Lions between 2003 and 2005, Printers avoids individual declaration where he is placed in the middle, or at the top, of his teammates.

“This is not a one-guy show,” Printers said. “Never has been and never will be.”

But speak to his teammates, such as veteran slotbacks Geroy Simon and Paris Jackson, who have leadership claims based on tenure, and they’ll give it to you straight.

“I would have to say [it’s Printers’ team],” Jackson said. “The way he comes in, the way he addresses the media, the way he addressed the team, he’s our No. 1 leader right now, and that’s why he has that No. 1 on his chest.”

One year ago, Printers wasn’t at a CFL training camp, despite a résumé that included a CFL most outstanding player award. The perception of No. 1 was that he was too into No. 1, too immature, not personally accountable, and lacking the leadership qualities needed from a quarterback.

It stayed that way until October when Wally Buono, Lions general manager and head coach, was desperate to salvage his sinking season, and desperate for a quarterback after trying four other options. Buono and Printers had kept in contact, and the coach said he noticed changes in Printers, growth that suggested it wouldn’t be like before.

To recap, Printers burst onto the scene in 2004, leading the Lions to the Grey Cup as the CFL’s best player. But he was benched for the championship game in lieu of Dave Dickenson, which started a downward spiral.

In 2005, Printers was again Dickenson’s backup, but he wasn’t happy about it and the controversy divided the locker room. After a failed NFL foray with the Kansas City Chiefs, he returned north and joined the lowly Hamilton Tiger-Cats in 2007, where he was expected to be the franchise’s saviour.

It didn’t work that way. Surrounded by poor talent, Printers was quick to blame others, and became a pariah in his own locker room. At the end of his second season in stripes, Hamilton released him and he was left to twist until Buono threw him a lifeline last fall.

By his third week, Printers was again the starter. He played four games, two of them postseason contests, and flashed some of that magical ability to make plays with his slippery feet, and with his rocket-launcher arm. It was enough for Buono to name him the starter heading into 2010, completing a full circle of rehabilitation.

“This year is a fresh start,” Printers said. “I’m just elated to be a part of this organization, like I always have [been], to push us to the next level.”

Printers, 29, is a religious man and a philosophical man, and he believes that certain things – including second chances – are preordained.

He said he doesn’t remember where he was for the start of camp last year. He claimed not to remember how he felt because it was all “a blur.” And he said being at Day 1 of camp here this year doesn’t resonate with him because he doesn’t question the past.

“It’s not anything divine, it’s just what it’s supposed to be,” he said. “I can’t explain it any better or worse than that. Things happen because they’re supposed to happen.”

Buono refused to say that it’s Printers’ team now, or that the season will be defined by his quarterback. But the coach acknowledged that Printers will be counted on for leadership, and is being asked to guide the Leos to a championship.

“Honestly, I think you’re going to see a lot better Casey than you saw last year,” Buono said. “He’s going to be so much more polished, and so much more prepared.”
