Puppy Training
I just bought a new 8 week old puppy and I'm looking for any tricks or tips to training the little thing. I'm talking all types of training.....learning to not shit all over my carpet, learning to sleep in a kennel at night.
Also....quick question. Has anyone else ran into this problem? He's a male dog and he gets along great with my girlfriend but he butts heads with me ALL the time. I'm sure this has something to do with the alpha male thing but is there a way to break him of this? Repost Anti-freeze Chicks dig guys with bikes I stole a laptop |

First to answer your last question, you'll have to get rid of the girlfriend or the dog.
The rest can be taken care of by antifreeze |

I swear by putting a bell attached to a string on the door for potty training. Take him out all the time and everytime you need ring the bell with his nose. It took me 2 days and my dog was ringing the bell to go outside. After a week or so the bell had to go because the little shit new she could get outside to play just by ringing the bell, but by then she new to just sit by the door.
Alpha male: assert yourself now. Wrestle with the dog, pin him down and make sure you don't let him bite. It may be cute now when he nips, but it won't be when he's bigger and he won't know the difference. Hold his mouth shut for a second when he tries to bite. Just generally play with him, but make sure you always end up with the upper hand. |

As far as not deficating the carpet. We used A modified Doggie doorbell training. We hung Christmas bells on the door and everytime we let the dog out we would ring the bell and take his paw and ring the bell then let him out after about a week of doing this consistantly he got it and now when he needs to go outside he rings the bell and we can hear it anywhere in house so we know he has to go our side.
As far as the alpha male thing you could always mount him I guess. You might want to ask your girlfriend if you can practice on her.

Leash Training: leave no slack in the leash. You can start with a regular collar, but if he fights it move to a choke collar for training. Walk with your dog right on your knee on a very short leash and make frequent stops, turns and reverse direction all the while keeping the leash tight. He will soon learn that he needs to stay right at your leg or he'll feel a tug. Remember: when he does good, whether it be potty outside, a good stop with you on the leash, etc. PRAISE THE HELL OUT of the dog. Dog's live for their owner's appreciation and work to please you. This is also a reason to never use your hand to scold/hit your dog as he will come to fear the hand that you will later want to pet him with. Read online, that's where I found most of my info and there is a ton of it out there. I don't know what kind of dog you have, but if you're interested you can teach them tons of things. My lab knows somewhere around 20 commands (some of them in German just because we thought it would be a cool thing to teach her). |

We got our puppy at 10 weeks so we started right away. In the begining we cleaned up a few messes but that is part of the process.

Has anyone ever invested in any professional training?
I know Petsmart offers 8 weeks of training where they teach the dogs to sit, stay and fetch. They also say that they teach potty training but I'm not sure how that works. Does that mean he'll only go to the bathroom in a Petsmart? lol |

Take the dog out frequently. Every couple of hours at the very least and immediately after meals. You must establish that outside is where it does its business. Never inside. The primary reason why people have problems training their dogs is laziness.
If you're lazy, the dog is going to piss and crap in your house. If you get off your ass now, you won't have problems later. Simple. But this doesn't mean that it's easy. Also, if you haven't invested in an exercise pen, do so. Nice to be able to put the thing away and not watch it 24/7. Get a piece of melamine to use as a floor, and you're set. |

One of those times was quite funny. The oldest one, when we had just had her 2 or 3 weeks, never wandered far from us. She started getting braver and expanding her territory. One night she had wandered out of the living room and when I called her, she came to me promptly from the hallway.....carrying a turd in her mouth. She was quite proud of it too, as if to say, "Look at what I made!"
