Official "My Kid's Team" and "The Team I Coach" Thread

A lot of us have kids playing, or we coach a youth team whether it's Elementary School up through the higher ranks. Thought it was appropriate to have a gather thread where we can cheer each other on, bring each other up, share in each others' joy and misery.

My boys 5th grade team had to play two games yesterday, winning the first game in OT, 8-0. Our second game that day was a grinder in the heat & humidity, and it was a tough one going against a fresh team, and we fell to 1-1 on our team record, falling 16-0.

Today, our third game. Hoping we can start off 2-1, and that would match all of our wins from last season.

How's everybody else doing?

Not much to add here but if anyone sees some kid that might be able to play RT they should text Haley ASAP.

I seem to remember a thread along these lines a while back that didn't end particularly well.

VARSITY
I coached little league baseball for 13 years. Competitive and recreational. Had a top 10 team in the state the last few years. Even took a team to the USSSA World Series one year.

I coached pee wee football for 4 years.

I never allowed my teams to travel or stay overnight for a tournament. I never over practiced to where they had to make a choice of school work of practice. I got sponsers to keep the parental costs down.

Because of this I was never able to recruit the top 10 area talent despite being a top 10 ranked team. Never regretted it nor was I ever tempted to change to win thew chanpionship.

Word of advise to yout coaches. The chances are very very slim that you have a future professional on your youth team. play hard and play to win but not sacrificing their youth. Don't make the team the end all be all of the player and his family. And for crissakes have some fun every damn day of practice or game.

My son graduated High School last year. You wouldn't believe how many invites I got to graduations. Thank you notes from kids. How many kids said their favorite summer of all time was playing with my teams. I shouldn't have left to go play on that traveling team etc. Thats why you should coach kids, not to win trophies.

I am a bit more of a "General Manager" than a "Head Coach" although I seem to wear both titles. Might drop the "Head Coach" title on a buddy without his knowing it.

We went 1-2 in our tourney. Won the first game 8-0 in OT. Lost the second game 16-0. Our third game was an embarrassment, losing 34-6 to a local rival. Gave up 14 points on special teams, and then gave up TD's on big plays to the outside again, again and again. I'm stacked up front, but I just couldn't match the outside speed of the other team.

Reality? We're a bunch of big, slow white kids. So long as we play power football right up the gut, we're good for 3-7 yards every play. We try to do anything outside - epic fail.

Sigh.

We coached a 6th grade boys and 6th grade girls basketball team last year - school teams. Those players improved dramatically through the season. We won every game except for the ones where the opposing team kept their best players in the whole time. We always subbed players out so they played equal time(we had some first year players who couldn't even dribble a ball when we started).

Both our teams also played on traveling teams that were coached by their parents and they took all of our plays and used them on their traveling teams. At the end of the year, they both ended up beating the top ranked teams in state.

None of these kids were overly tall, fast, or athletically gifted. They learned to play as a team and that is what made them better than the other teams who just relied on one or two players.

Everyone gets involved, everyone has fun, and honestly they started getting along better at school where before they had a few kids they just picked on and made fun of. They actively cheered for those kids in the games and everyone was excited when they scored. The wins were great but seeing them develop as a team and develop friendships where their used to be bullying, etc. was really the best part of it.

My team played today at 1:30. Right now I'm glad I didn't watch as Todd Haley figured out how to meld the offensive genious of the Herm Edwards era with the defensive gauntlet of the Vermeil era.

Anyway, we played a local team and my boys ground it out and we won 14-6. I was particularly proud of our QB, who was never shaken, and my own kid who had 5 tackles for loss, and one fumble recovery while on defense, and performed admirably at center. I'm not normally one to pop off about my own kid. A couple of our other D-linemen were getting double-teamed every play, leaving my kid with a single blocker.

Next week we face the team that beat us 34-6 in the preseason tournament. I'm, hoping they come into the game over-confident. Maybe we can use that...

Wow, I'd pretty much forgotten all about that. I guess I was just there to vent and move on.

Hope others are enjoying their season. Had a couple of losses. Last week it was a heartbreaker - 14-8 loss. Same team last year beat us 28-0, so I shouldn't complain.

In practice this last week, one of my kids got tangled up with another player in a tackling drill, ended up with a broken thumb. My kid got his ankle rolled up... didn't know how bad it was. I taped him up for practice on Wednesday and Thursday. He got rolled up again on Thursday night, slipped on it at school Friday, so we took him in for X-Rays. No break. He wore a brace Fri & Sat., and he told me he was good to play today. Wife gave the green light.

The team we played today has beaten us before. Their nose typically turns sideways and just rolls into the offensive line. Halfway into the second quarter, my son couldn't get out of his way, got his ankle rolled up again.

It always sucks when you have to carry a kid off the field. Double sucks when it's your own kid.

High ankle sprain. It'll be a long time healing. No contact this week, we'll see what he looks like for next Sunday. Our next two games are against weaker opponents, and we need to win them both to qualify for our postseason.

Good luck to the rest of you that are coaching this fall.
