Peterson signs one-year franchise deal with Niners

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Linebacker Julian Peterson signed a one-year tender offer Friday with the San Francisco 49ers, who had named him their franchise player for the second straight season.

Peterson's deal is worth about $7.29 million -- a 20 percent raise from last season, when he played just five games before tearing his Achilles' tendon.

Peterson, a two-time Pro Bowl player and an All-Pro in 2003, sat out every minicamp and most of training camp last season, turning down a six-year, $37.8 million offer in a futile attempt to become the NFL's highest-paid defensive player.

Though he still hasn't completed his rehabilitation from surgery on his Achilles' tendon, Peterson signed the deal so that he can attend meetings next weekend at the 49ers' first minicamp under new coach Mike Nolan. The coaching staff intends to install a 3-4 defense that should take greater advantage of Peterson's talents.

Peterson is expected to be healthy in time for training camp in July.

yep... actually signing a tag tender each year and you make more money than a normal contract.

as long as you stay healthy and play at a high enough level.

if your play drops or get hurt ... your screwed.

true ... his play is valuable enough to get a pass this time

if he gets hurt some more though he will be looking for a short or mid-range deal to try and prove himself again.

Did a rule change? I thought you couldn't designate someone as your franchise player two years in a row, and the Niners did just that with Norm, er, Julian Peterson.

Orlando Pace and Walter Jones were both franchise players two years in a row and were going to be three years but each got big multi-year contracts this off-season.
