When the QB coach for the 104th ranked passing attack on a 1-11 team becomes available, you have to make the hire.

Grunhard was very interesting on Petro's show. He's definitely fired up about the things that are happening with KU football.

A few tidbits:

Wanted to take the same OL coaching position at Notre Dame a few years back, but that was vetoed by his family. Taking the job at KU was a unanimous YES from his family.

Met with Weis on Sunday and they discussed the position of OL coach. He was offered and accepted the position on Monday.

Will recruit the KC and Chicago metro areas.

He said of all the coaches available, he likes Jeff Fisher as the next Chiefs' coach.

They gave him one as a senior in HS for being epically badass.

That's how big of a deal Ron Powlus was.

He was my introduction to player procurement in college football. What a freakin' disappointment that dude was.

Oh well, like I said, no idea how he'll be as a quarterbacks coach - but definitely a blast from the past.

FFS, even as a big Mizzou fan, I give two shits about who Kansas hires. Why do you guys even care? I give their coaches about a 25% of chance of turning their program into a bowl contender before they jump ship. I mean, it's not like we won't find out.

Weis' Staff Coming Into Shape
Dec 13, 2011 -- 4:15pm
By Nate Bukaty

Charlie Weis has been busy at work since arriving in Lawrence late last Thursday night. He held is introductory press conference on Friday. Then he addressed the crowd at Allen Fieldhouse during halftime of the KU-Ohio State basketball game on Saturday. Over the weekend, he also hosted perhaps the most highly touted quarterback recruit at KU in at least a couple of generations. Then on Tuesday, he began announcing the newest additions of his coaching staff.

We’ll get to the staff in a moment. But first, a quick word on that highly touted QB. It’s no secret that Dayne Crist was in attendance at Allen Fieldhouse on Saturday. Crist, a 6’4”, 235 quarterback has already graduated from Notre Dame, and is eligible to find a new school, enroll for the spring semester, and play next year. He’s also scheduled to visit Wisconsin and Delaware. Coming out of high school, Crist was a 5-star player, rated as the number 2 quarterback in the nation by Rivals.com. This is likely the first 5-star football player, let alone quarterback, that Kansas has had on campus since recruiting services really started rating these things. If Weis is able to land Crist, it’s hard to imagine a better way to start off his coaching tenure at KU. Word is trickling out that there could be several other “senior transfers” finding their way from Notre Dame to KU to play for the coach who recruited them in the first place. Stay tuned.

Now, onto the staff. It came as no big surprise that our good buddy Tim Grunhard was officially announced as KU’s offensive line coach. First of all, I couldn’t be happier for Grunny. I’ve known Tim for over a decade, going back to his days as a player with the Chiefs. He’s a good man, a hard worker, and an extremely passionate football guy. One of the things that I like the most about Grunny is the fact that he has been willing to pay his dues in the coaching profession. Ask yourself this: how many guys who played for 10 years in the NFL would be willing to go back and coach in high school and teach Religion to prove themselves? And we’re not talking about some journeyman NFL player either. This guy was a 2nd round draft pick, and one of the anchors of some of the best offensive lines in Chiefs’ history. A lot of guys with that type of resume would think that coaching at the high school level is beneath them. Not Grunny.

And Tim didn’t just take the job at Bishop Miege. He excelled at it. In his six seasons at Miege, Grunhard led the Stags to five straight district titles, and one state championship. So Tim has already proven that he knows how to coach. Now he needs to prove that he can recruit. There’s no doubt that Weis will be relying on Grunhard to build off of the relationships he’s developed with area coaches during his time as one of their peers. After hearing the kind of passion that Grunny has for this new job, when he came on with us last Friday, and again on The Program with Soren Petro on Tuesday, I have little doubt that Grunny will be a success there as well.

Weis also announced that he has hired his quarterbacks coach: former Notre Dame QB Ron Powlus. I don’t know nearly as much about Powlus on a personal level as I do about Grunny, so my comments on him will be much more brief. I know Powlus was a very highly touted QB coming out of high school, and he was never able to fully live up to those unrealistic expectations. But he did play in the NFL for 3 years, which one would think has come in very handy as a college QB’s Coach. He also was the QB’s coach at Notre Dame when Jimmy Clausen developed into a first-round draft pick.

As excite as I am about Weis’ first to hires, it’s clear that his most important move is still to come: Defensive Coordinator. There’s no doubt that Weis has to make solid contact here, if not hit a home run. There has been a ton of speculation about Jim Leavitt, but nothing substantial so far. I asked Sheahon Zenger, who has a long time personal relationship with Leavitt, about it, but he refused to tip his hand. The idea of Weis and Leavitt on the same staff at KU just seems to good to be true, but I guess we’ll have to wait and see. Weis is off to a good start at Kansas, but the hardest work is still ahead.

Except the Jets' fans lived with Herm as their coach. This is just sniping from MU fans (many of whom would be happy with Pinkel's departure) and KSU fans that are going to need a new coach in a couple of years.
