Jets cut Mark Sanchez

The Mark Sanchez era is over.

Sanchez, the quarterback who went to the Jets with the fifth overall pick in the 2009 NFL draft and has been a polarizing player since, has been released. The Jets officially announced the long-awaited move on Friday afternoon.

At his best, Sanchez showed promise as a player who could develop into a franchise quarterback who would lead the team for years to come. But he had significant flaws as a passer, flaws which were often overlooked in his first two seasons, when the Jets rode a strong defense to the AFC Championship Game.

Later on, when the Jets’ defense didn’t play quite as well, it became more apparent that Sanchez simply didn’t have what it took to lead a team to a winning record. The Jets’ baffling decision to give Sanchez a contract extension in 2012 was followed a year later by the decision to draft Geno Smith in 2013, which sealed Sanchez’s fate.

Now Sanchez becomes an unrestricted free agent and can sign with any team. Someone will surely pick Sanchez up and let him compete for a roster spot, but it’s unlikely that he’ll be a starter in 2014. Sanchez has a lot of work to do to turn his career around, and if he ever does it, it won’t be as a Jet.

Just because they busted elsewhere, isn't a justification for not picking them here.

If the Chiefs didn't pick them, they suck.

If the Chiefs did pick them, they rock.

Get with the program.

People say "look at all the qb busts we've avoided" but that's a pretty myopic view.

Some may have busted here sure, but its not a sure thing

Eh. I don't see why not. If he was at least average in NY, then maybe you could say its the environment that brought him down but he was a flat out bust. A bust is a bust IMO.

I think that's justification for not drafting him. Doesn't mean I'm happy we drafted Jackson, but I'm not good with the fact that we didn't draft Sanchez

Um, it's the New York Jets.

He might have been better off almost ANYWHERE other than the Raiders.

Steve Young was a bust in Tampa, so was Trent Dilfer. They're both wearing Super Bowl rings on TV now.

Sanchez did more for the Jets, than the Jets did for him.

Once someone is drafted elsewhere, that's basically the end of it. Different coaching, systems, environment etc.

What? How is that exactly?
The Jets made him "Sanchize" and paid him handsomely. The Jets being in NY and all Sanchez got several contracts for commercials and so on.
And the Jets team carried Sanchez to two AFCC games. Without that defense, running game and oline Sanchez is and has been nothing, except Mr. Buttfumble.

He had little more than one year as a college starter. Of course he needed a decent team around him. Two AFC Championship games is quite an achievement for a QBs first two years in the league. Strip him of his weapons, abandon the blueprint that was working, bring in one of the worst OCs and then join the Tebow circus - who would think the guy would regress?

In a stable environment, Sanchez could flourish

Mark Sanchez might want to loosen that headband.

After a fake Twitter account for general manager Howie Roseman -- named "Rowie Hoseman" -- tweeted to Sanchez welcoming him to the team, the former New York Jets quarterback fell for it - Hard.

In his defense, he could've mistakenly found the parody account because he tweeting from a cellphone.

You could be right. But you can see notifications for a specific person on your phone.

I mean, Sanchez signed a one-year, $4 million contract with the Eagles and not exactly sure Howie Roseman is the general manager and not Rowie Hoseman?

$4 million ... I would never forget the handshake...
