The much-discussed potential trade of Branden Albert from the Chiefs to the Dolphins doesn’t appear likely at the price Albert is currently seeking.

Although the Chiefs and Dolphins can probably agree on compensation — the Dolphins sending a second-round pick to Kansas City — the hangup is that Albert wants the kind of money that the Dolphins aren’t willing to spend. Specifically, according to Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports, Albert wants between $8 million and $9 million a year on a long-term deal.

In other words, Albert is looking for the same kind of contract that left tackle Jake Long got from the Rams — the very contract the Dolphins wouldn’t give Long, which is why he left Miami for St. Louis.

If the Dolphins weren’t willing to pay Long that kind of money, it’s hard to see why they’d be willing to give up a second-round draft pick for the privilege of paying Albert that kind of money. So the Dolphins may need to look elsewhere for a left tackle. And Albert may have to settle for playing this season for the Chiefs, making $9.8 million, and hitting free agency next year.

But if they think they can get a big upgrade, on the cheap, and a guy they can build the OL around, why be mad?

They are much better at run blocking. Our offense needs pass blocking.

im really not sold on this idea...we save cash now but lose our #1 overall pick to MAYBE break even.....and then what happens when Joekel's contract needs re-done? back to square 1.

to me this is a lateral move, at very best...

What does what they do have anything to do with what we need? They are the 10 best pass blocking line, and the best run blocking line int he league. I'd say that puts them up there pretty high.

At worst, they are probably the 3rd best OL in the NFL.

The fact that Alex Smith took that many sacks behind that in the type of offense they run is worriesome.

The first overall pick gets a decent deal but it's not top 5 money at his position, IIRC.

When his deal comes up, if he's worth it, re sign him. If he's not, well, yeah we probably busted.

But we are one of the worst franchises in the NFL right now. Chances probably need to be taken.

I do expect whoever we take at 1 to be better than Albert day 1 and as much as these LT's are getting pumped, I expect whichever we take to be top 5 at his position by year 2.
