Changes of Scenery: Turning a Bust into a Star

The Baldwin/Jenkins thread makes me wonder this.

What are some examples of guys who were busts for the team that drafted them, and then blossomed when they went to a new team?

I'm sure that some exist, but right now I'm having some trouble coming up with a good example. In particular, let's concentrate on high draft picks, but if you have others who languished and then became stars, throw them out there.

Favre flourished with his second team, but I'm not sure he was a bust with his first team. He just didn't play for them.

Priest Holmes flourished with his second team, but he was undrafted and had a 1,000 yard season with his first team.

Randy Moss flourished with New England after busting for Oakland, but he did pretty well with Minnesota before that.

Who ya got? Throw some names up here.

Steve Young: Played in the USFL, drafted by the Bucs, traded to 49ers, in the Hall of Fame.

Jim Plunkett: Drafted by the Patriots, traded to the 49ers, released, picked up by Oakland, Two-Time Super Bowl winner.

Brad Johnson: 9th round pick, bounced around, won a Super Bowl with Tampa.

Doug Williams: First round selection of the Bucs, dumped, won a Super Bowl in Washington.

There are several more examples.

Brad Johnson was a 9th round pick? Wow. Guess that really couldn't be considered a bust, either. The other names on this list are good examples.

9th Round picks don't exactly count as busts.

A "change of scenery" can make a difference. Draft position should not be a major factor in the success of moving to a new team. Unless it's a late round pick (or an undrafted player), which normally has marginal talent relevant to the rest of the league.

Now that's a really good one.

We even had that joker for a while, and then let him go right before he exploded. You wonder what happened there. I remember seeing some show where they were attributing it to yoga training or something, but there had to be something else.

Tommy Maddux - First Round pick in Denver who was terrible. Years later he makes the playoffs in Pittsburgh after selling insurance...

Jimmy Smith - 2nd round pick in Dallas. Went on to be a badass in Jacksonville.

Bettis was really good with the Rams if I remember right. I don't recall why/how he left that team. (Hmm, in looking at his stats, he had a fantastic rookie year and then ran in mud his whole second year and tailed off his third year before leaving. I just remembered his fantastic rookie year. The Rams wanted to move him to fullback and he instead requested and got a dirt-cheap trade.)

Hearst is a good example. He was nothing in Arizona, despite being a "can't miss" prospect. That one really makes you wonder.
