FA Backup QB's for this upcoming offseason

  • Foles is clearly way to expensive to keep.
  • Bray has yet to prove he can be a reliable NFL backup.
  • I doubt we put a rookie in the backup spot - clearly
QB2 is a position that Dorsey/Reid value highly (see: Daniel & Foles).

Taking all this into account, and assuming the above all transpires, who are some of the Free Agent QB's that we could put behind Smith next year?
___

2/15/17 UPDATE: Per Rotoworld, Chiefs are not expected to pick up Foles $6.4m option.

Furthermore, the Chiefs FO has continued to pound the drum that Alex Smith will be starting this upcoming season.

I think his contract currently is a non-starter for next year. We would be insane to pay a QB2 that much for a 1year deal. And if we release him, we don't get a comp pick, btw.

He either restructures or he's gone. He's young and wants to be a starter. He will likely want to make starter money as well.

This is why I think we bring in a FA as a backup. Who are some of those options?

That's a lot of speculation.

No one wanted Foles as a starter in 2016, so why would that change in 2017?

And who would even consider giving him "Starter's Money" when he's basically the same guy that Eagles and Rams dumped?

Who's going to pay Foles $18 million plus a year after backing up Alex Smith in KC?

Alex Smith, back up.

Pay Tony Romo a 2-year 19 million dollar deal.

Profit.

If Bray is not good enough to be a backup QB, by now, then what's he doing on our roster? I'd give him a shot, or cut ties with him completely.

I'f we get a qb early, in 5 years, if he turns out to be a qb that is franchise caliber, he will cost just as much, if not more than what we are spending now. And we will be in the exact same position we are in now. Your logic makes 0 sense on this area of topic.

Since u need the help, this is what we do to stay relevant, we hit on draft picks, we shuffle out guys in contract years that are older to teams for draft picks like the Patriots do. We then higher our chances of hitting on our picks, and we keep cretain players at reasonable prices, while letting the overpriced not worth it guys go while getting good value from them. We don't and shouldn't draft a qb early until alex smith is 37-38, that way when he retire's at 40, we have a solid 3 years or maybe 4 of rookie contract left in our already poised, and polished qb.

Disagree here. There's no certainty that your QB makes it to that age. There's also no certainty that if he does, and you pick a rookie at that point, that the rookie will be a franchise qb.

You have to keep picking guys you think are talented and value spots, because if one blows up quickly, you can send your veteran QB to another team for a bounty of picks.

Like what the 49ers tried to do with Kap, but ****ed up, because he wasn't nearly as good as they thought he was.

Agree with this. No telling when or if Alex has another concussion or injury that persuades him into retiring within the next 2-3 years. There should be a cheap but talented young QB waiting in the wings for 2017.

My preference would be for a day 2 QB selection in this coming draft.

That way, if somehow Alex is still the solid QB starter in 2-3+ years.. and the young QB has developed nicely into what is perceived as solid starter-ready...

hey, it's a nice problem to have.

I believe you take the best QB available that fits your system, even if that is not in the 1st round. Drafting a QB in the first just because it is the first round makes no sense. You draft the PERSON, not the round.

Awesome idea. Romo will probably be good for at least 3 games before he gets another serious injury.

I'm going to assume that you were joking and my sarcasm meter needs to be adjusted.

If the Chiefs somehow manage a SB win I would go with a Draft pick and Bray. Otherwise I keep the window open and pay for a veteran, Foles most likely.
