This weekend is Ring Weekend for the USMA Class of 2019. West Point was the first school to have class rings, and they started the tradition way back in 1835. Every class since has had rings except two; one had cuff links and one had nothing. Each year, families of some graduates donate their rings to be melted and used in the creation of the next generation’s rings.

It’s been an uphill battle for most of us, but I like to think we’ve earned it.

1836 was the class that didn’t do anything (the tradition hadn’t caught on yet), but I don’t know why 1879 did cuff links instead.
