Alex Smith Traded to Chiefs

Well, it looks like the deal is done.

https://twitter.com/intent/user?scre...w_p=tweetembed

Jay Glazer @JayGlazer
49ers have completed a trade with the Chiefs for Alex Smith, tho can't be official til March 12. Chiefs really made a commitment to Smith

Jay Glazer @JayGlazer
Deal has been agreed upon between Chiefs and 49ers. Compensation unclear but I'm told again Chiefs have made a clear commitment to Smith.

Smith is physically more talented and overall a better QB than Cassel. By how mch, can't say.

I think the two go to show how much coaching can improve and/or disintegrate a team/franchise.

Cassel had probably the worse coaching situation in the NFL in 2011 and 2012 where Smith had the best and a talented attacking defense.

The reason, IMO, the same teams are consistently good and win, isn't necessarily the players only, but they are generally the best run franchises. I don't know if we really understand just how bad things were here the last 4 years.

After talking to someone who worked directly in the situation, it was bad. Really bad.

I don't "love" Alex Smith but its ridiculous to say that he's Matt Cassel.

I find it hard to believe, although not impossible, that Reid and Dorsey traded for a QB that effectively mirrors a guy on their roster.

If so, their stay in KC will be brief.

Sorry I'm including 2011. Its 2013 now. I think two years is enough to suggest a trend. I'll put it another way. I think the chances of Smith going back to what he was three years ago, are about the same ad Cassel going back to what he was three years ago.

see

The academy finally pounded the truth into my skull - WE NEED A QBOTF

I do feel like i am in bizzaro world........

Alex Smith seems very similar to cassel, a SLIGHT upgrade but not anything other than a game manager, stop gap, poopy pants who will shit himself if Charles or Bowe goes down...just like assel

Cassel- 9 games
161/277, 58.1%, 1,796, 6.48 per, 6td/12int, 36.5 QBR, 66.7 rating

Alex Smith-8.5 games
153/218, 70.2%, 1,737, 7.97, 13/5, 70.1, 104.1

So Alex threw 60 less passes, same yardage, more td's, less interceptions, more efficiently, for 1 yard more per attempt?

That's exactly the same to me.

If you want to say one full season, plus half a season where HE GOT BENCHED is a trend...thats fine

Imagine if we benched assel in 11.., then traded him for a second rounder based on the 2010 numbers

With proper coaching they are ultra conservative game managers. That's it.

Hell, for all we know, maybe Geno and/or Barkley don't even go in the first round. Pretty sure Buffalo will take a QB, but if they don't it's conceivable that one of them could be around int he second.

Seems pretty imperative we trade down and get a 2nd round pick back.

Heres the thing, ive been 'on record' against getting Smith since he got Benched...

The career stats show theyre similar, the last couple seasons show smith has been better than assel, but still game manager / 1td per game type numbers...

Saying 'he is better than cassel' is like saying herpes is better than full blown HIV

I haven't seen enough of Smith to know why he's conservative. I know why Cassel is, he's incapable of making the plays. I have seem Smith make bold throws in big games. I distinctly remember saying at the time, I was wrong about Smith. I thought he wasn't capable of play like that.

They went with Kaepernick because he's really good, and played outstanding in place of Smith.

I'll ask again though. Was Smith struggling before the injury?

Alex Smith had 13 td's this season in 8.5 games, 10 int's the last two years total.
Matt Cassel had 16td's the last two seasons total. Cassel also had 12 interceptions this season alone.
