Heartbreaking scenes...

Just saw a meme on Facebook and it got me thinking, what are the most heartbreaking movie scenes in all of history?

I'll throw a couple out there.

Worst in a children's movie: Artax's death scene in the Swamp of Sadness in The Neverending Story.

All-time: Oskar Schindler devastated that he could have saved more lives at the end of Schindler's list.

It's a great watch.
I remember the scene he sees the girl he loves, and I think he has a doughnut or something and he's torn between stuffing it in his face as she looks at him and showing restrain but can't help himself and pigs out on the doughnut...I thought that was a sad scene...that and when his sister goes ape shit on him for eating all the Chinese food before he could get it back from the restaurant.

funny this came up....I was JUST talking about this VERY scene this weekend. I think they say "we'll be friends forever".
we just picked up a new puppy Saturday. my family of 4 was in an uproar over a name. in response to someones less than awesome suggestion my son said....that's dumb why don't just name him Tod or something stupid like that.

well that got my mind spinning. I discounted Tod, and due to his color I eliminated Copper. but when I suggested Chief....it was over.

lil Chief

Depressing might be too weak a word. At the end of that movie I was simply DEVASTATED and couldn't move for a minute or two and just sat in stunned silence.

Agee's story was incredible. I couldn't believe the barrage of setbacks thrown his way.

His team's improbable run in the state tournament was so satisfying. That kid had so much damn perseverance.

I guess I am the old school movie guy.....4 more heartbreaking scenes:

1) One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest- When Chief Bromden sees then bring McMurphy back into the hall and he sneaks over to tell him he knew he wouldn't leave without him, and then realizes they had just done a lobotomy on McMurphy. So knowing his cohort wouldn't want to live like that he smothers him to death, then picks up the big sink and throws it thru the window and escapes.

2) Armageddon- The scene where Bruce Willis's character is saying goodbye to his daughter.

3) Deep Impact- The impact of the asteroid is about to hit and Tea Leoni has been given a pass on the helicopter out. As she hurries to the helipad she passes Laura Innes character sitting in the playroom with her daughter crying about what is going to happen and the fact she has no way out. Tea Leoni grabs the daughter, and heads up to the helipad. She gives her spot to Laura Innes and her daughter...she then goes to the beach to be with her estranged Father and they stand together as the incoming tidal wave hits.

4) Same Movie- The astronauts are talking to their loved ones on Earth as they prepare a suicide mission to destroy the largest of the 2 asteroids. The scene where a now blind Ron Eldard is talking to his wife and new baby, and where Robert Duvall's character is talking to his dead wife always kills me.

There is a movie Kevin Bacon was in called Taking Chance. About a officer [Bacon], who has never been in combat escorting a fallen marine home to be buried. The whole movie is one sad scene after another. When I get home from work I'll try to find a clip....

Two of my fav movies of all time.
In Armageddon it's heartbreaking when they are all cheering at the successful explosion/splitting of the asteroid and Liv Tyler is just standing there....knowing her dad just died setting it off.

An Officer And A Gentleman - when he finds his best bud hanging in the motel room. "You didn't even say goodbye".

I always thought Heath Ledger's death in The Patriot was shitty. In fact both of the brother's deaths bugged me which made the retribution all that much better.

Also when the Indian son in Last of the Mohicans runs ahead of Daniel Day Lewis and the father only to get to the bad guy and get smoked, that one sucked. But again the Dad destroying him moments later was a really great moment.

Is that the one where the entire ordeal is detailed from the cleaning of his blood covered possessions until the end?

If so, I saw it and admit it's a really good emotional flick. Just the honor that escorts have in walking them to their final resting place is enough to bring a tear to your eye.

Heh, watching this movie in theaters is a prominent memory of mine because it was one of the initial factors that caused me to walk away from Christianity.

I must have been 15 or 16. People all around me were weeping uncontrollably throughout the movie. The movie felt like gore/shame-porn. I remember this strange feeling washing over me... I had the acute feeling that I was surrounded by irrationality.

Everything felt cult-y, suddenly.
