As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple.

I believe Apple’s brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role.

I have made some of the best friends of my life at Apple, and I thank you all for the many years of being able to work alongside you.

If it's caught in time. But that's the problem with this type of cancer.

That's not always true. A person can get unemployment insurance benefits after they resign if they can prove their resignation was a case of constructive discharge.

At face value, probably not much. However, he's really seen as a visionary and has had his fingerprints all over anything they've done in the past decade that starts with an "i". He's undoubtedly created a culture of innovation that won't take a hit from his stepping down, but if he's not really involved on a day to day basis, Apple clearly is lesser for it.

If nothing else, there's no way in hell Apple's stock doesn't take a hit tomorrow.

In any case, how could anyone not have expected this? Dude has pancreatic cancer and had a liver transplant in 2009. He's been gone from Apple since January. It was only a matter of time.
