Do you want a water purifier or just a softener? If you want a full-bore system go with rainsoft or someone reputable. They're pricey though. I'd call around and see if the top companies have any re-furb'd machines. Friend of mine got one for about 2K and he loves it.

My dad had 4 different water softeners in 10 years here in Vegas because they ALL sucked and he installed a Kinetico system and it has been going strong for over 6 now. I installed a Kinetico system when I first moved into my house because of my dads recommendations and consumer reports had it listed as BEST when I had it installed. NO ONE in the ratings had anything bad to say except the PRICE was more than any other unit. But in this case you get what you pay for. I would suggest that not only do you get the softener but get the reverse osmosis unit for under the sink.... you will love the water you get from that.
Don't know if they have a Kinetico dealer near there but it would be worth a look IMHO. Just know that my whole setup ran just over 5K but that is the best money I have spent on my house and the clean water I now have. Of course I live in one of the WORST area's in the USA for hard water so it makes sense for me to have the best.
