Carl haters would love this move. For all the AFC West inbreeding, this would top it all off:

Peterson to Chargers?
Kansas City Chiefs president Carl Peterson was sighted on a visit with San Diego Chargers president Dean Spanos last Friday, but Peterson said it would be a mischaracterization to call it a substantive meeting about him possibly joining the AFC West rival after the season.

"We went out to dinner with our wives," said Peterson. "We have become good friends. We're fellow executives who attend league business meetings together and we're always talking about business and issues of football. Unfortunately, he got the last laugh (when the Chargers beat the Chiefs 17-16)."

Peterson did confirm that his contract (which pays him an estimated $1.8 million) with the Chiefs expires Feb. 1. He had no other comment on his future.

Spanos has given no indication on changes he is contemplating in the wake of the Chargers? 1-11 season. League sources have said they expect Spanos will ?clean house? in the front office and coaching staff. However, there have been mixed signals regarding the security of coach Mike Riley.

I hope he does go, but only because I can't see a new GM keeping our coaching staff. CP will be tough to replace IMO, but a fresh perspective from the top down seems like a good idea at this juncture. He would certainly help the Chargers, of that there's little doubt. Fingers crossed that Spanos made him a nice offer

Hmmm....This would be a "clasic" move. Carl COULDN'T get it done in KC and leaves with the franchise in a slide, for sunny San Diego and more bank. Funny how that would work out rather nicely for Carl.......Perhaps it has been on his mind for quite some time - could have something to do with his performance of late.

Take a look at what we had before Carl Peterson and what we've had since. Good GMs are harder to come by than good quarterbacks. We've got a guy who knows what he's doing. You may not like it, but he's produced solid football teams and made the franchise proud again.

And I think ultimately he will succeed.

Those who want him gone should be careful what you wish for. Take a look around the NFL. Look at every team over the past 10 to 11 years.

Compare what's happened in KC vs. most of the others. It could have been a whole lot worse.

It might get better if Carl left. But my guess is the odds are a whole lot better if he stays.

Run him off, and I'm not so sure any of us will be pleased with what we get. And two or three years from now we might just be bitching and moaning about how we let him get away.

Cuz the odds of the Chiefs doing a lot better - when you truly take a good look around the NFL - aren't very good.

Like I said, be careful what you wish for.

How about keeping Carl,
Keeping Gunn,
getting new assistants,
getting a real 15-25/att's/game running back,
Afraid we might kill the goose that laid the golden(ok-copper) eggs.

I have stated for over a year now, when Spanos did not hire a GM, beware of Carl when his contract is up. Also, did I not read Lamar had given permission for Spanos to talk to CP. It may have been just dinner, but I bet there was more talk than just clams (at least the seafood type).

Idahojim,

I agree with your post. Finding a replacement for CP is not going to be easy. On the flip side though what we really lack on this team IMO is:
coaching
a premier RB
leaders
Whatever else a new GM does, I fully expect the first 2 points to be addressed immediately. We might end up with another crappy coaching staff, an injured RB and overall poor talent. But the way I look at it is, we are going to lose a lot of veterans in the offseason (at least that is how it looks like unfolding). This might be a good time to change from the top. I am not sure that CP will have the desire necessary to "start over" with a team that likely will no longer have Grunny, Shields or Hasty, and maybe not even Grbac, Patton and other vets.

We could do a LOT worse than CP, but this seems like a good time for a switch, instead of spinning our wheels. We used to have the best O-line in the league, and we were wasting it with QB controversies and a smashmouth running style with no true RB. As it stands right now, we have premier receivers (including Gonzo) and a very capable QB as well as 5 or 6 players we could build around on defense. I'd like to see a fresh new perspective in the front office and among the coaches which would try to utilise and develop this talent.

I wonder if Saint fans defended Kuharic by saying "It could be worse!". The Chiefs have 3 more playoff wins than New Orleans in the last decade. They may catch us soon. What has King Carl done for us? Filled the stands? The fans filled the stands. They paid the price hikes year after year. Put a winner on the field? 3 playoff wins in 12 years? 25 teams have won playoff gams since we have. Built teams we can be proud of? Bam Morris? Vanover? Tim Barnett? Rison? HE signed these players and then lost with them...ANY GM could have done that. How about the way he treated John Tait? Real pro. I can see Tait signing long term any day now. How about his sterling player evaluation? signed Gannon to back up Bono. Trezell, Snow, Hill, Shehee, Cloud, Elkins, Blundin, Parker, Grey, McGlockton, Elliot, GUNTHER and the STOOGES. Arrowhead is a great football atmosphere. Tailgating is the best in the NFL, fans are the loudest and most knowledgable. These are not Carl's doing. These are the fans doing. Dont let Carl take credit for filling the stands. ANY other fans would have deserted after the Colt fiasco. Chief fans have stuck it out, and Carl raises ticket prices and takes credit for turning this franchise around? Bull****. He only has 3 more playoff wins than Steadman in the same time frame. WE the fans of the Chiefs have turned this franchise around and we deserve better then Peterson. We deserve a legit RB. We deserve a professional head coach, and we deserve a Superbowl.

Another thing to think about, Chiefs 40 million over the cap. He may look at that, and realize, we are not far from the 49er situation either. The Cowboys, are less over than we are, and are already talking about the next 2 to 3 years. I know there is a tendency to overlook the cap, because of capology, but eventually, you have to pay the piper.

I am ambivalent about the idea of CP leaving the Chiefs. He has certainly changed the football culture in KC. You really would have to suffer through the 70's and 80's to know how bad it was back then. On the negative side, the team currently seems headed in the wrong direction. It appears our defense will get worse before it gets better, and that is no way we will be a SB contender as long as that happens.

But I am very much against the idea of CP going to the Chargers. One thing you can count on is that a CP team will be competitive, this year's fiasco not withstanding. If the realigned West consists of KC, Oakland, Denver and SD, I could see real problems for KC with Oakland-Gruden, Denver-RAT, and SD-CP. Doormat here we come.

I posted this on another thread, but I really believe it...

<BLOCKQUOTE><font size="1" face="Helvetica, verdana, ariel">quote:</font><HR>
I think Peterson resigns...I mean, look at his resume to this point. USFL champs, NFC champs at the Eagles. The Chiefs record since he came here, the sellouts, the attendance, the merchandising. The current direction of this team hurts his reputation badly. I think he's a rat and he bails.

I hope he does.
<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>

To take it a bit further, the Chargers now look like the Chiefs in the 80's. Carl is king (no pun intended) in making a team like this competitive. SD would be the PERFECT opportunity for him to continue building that resume...

I wouldn't be too surprised to see Carl go to SD. He is a UCLA guy.

But I doubt he moves unless he is offered more money. he's stated that he wants another 4 year term in KC. As for quitting, I wouldn't count on it.

Actually, instead of Bill Kurkrich (sp?) I would assume Lynn Stiles (formerly from the Rams) would become the new GM. I don't think would be all bad. Many point tto his presence as to the reason we had such a strong draft this season.
