No no no ... Not THAT St. Louis!
Just posting this because its good to see the school I coached at until this year get some pub, and because I always get some wiseass tell me at some point... "You island boys don't know how to ball"....

From this weeks issue of Sports Illustrated.

"St. Louis High in Honolulu has produced three QB's now starting at major colleges: Darnell Arceneaux of Utah, Timmy Chang of Hawaii and Jason Gesser of Washington State. That's rare for a high school, but the Crusaders are a perennial power on the islands (currently ranked #5 in the nation) and have won 14 consecutive Interscholastic League of Hawaii State championships"

Big 12 fans may also recognize Outland trophy nominee, Dominic Raiola of Nebraska, also a recent St Louis graduate.

Check out the offensive talent we had starting one year:

~Chris Fuamata-Maafala... RB of the Steelers.
~Olin Kruetz... starting center for the Bears.
~Chris Naole... starting guard for the Saints.
~Benny Agbayani... starting LF for the Mets who was the Off. Player of the Year as a slot back.

Just glad to see some players I've coached make names for themselves.... If any body minds... I can always go back and discuss Sundays game.

It must seem like summer camp all year around there huh. No threat of snow in November either i guess. Oh well, you are justifiable in your pride, congratulations! (Just kidding about the warm weather comments, good football is good football no matter where it's played)

Thanks guys.

Too bad none of these guys will even spring for a lunch when I see them.

That team with Maafala, etc. could have beaten alot of college teams that year. I think we wound up #3 in the nation that year behind a Florida team and a Texas team.

Glad I'm "retired" though.
The pressure of winning and not being the one to screw up a long winning streak and national ranking plus dealing with recruiters was too much.

I really like Fuamata Maafala! I'd be very happy if KC could somehow manage a trade with Pittsburgh to acquire his services. The guy runs hard & has great size/speed.

MCF....

Prior to the hiring of June Jones last year, we had a coach here that turned a successful program into one that was on the verge of cancellation.... Coach Jones kept every single one of the top 15 players in state this year... Prior to his hiring we encouraged the kids to go away to schools... Raiola's younger brother already has all the upper echeleon teams after him.

HC.. regarding Fu.. I don't know if any one rememebers but his brother Nick was on the KC practice squad as a DT in the early 90's before a knee injury ended his career... He now copetes onthose strongest men comps.
I always thought Fu would be a better player if he would drop down to 235 or so.

Keeping local talent is a start, but how well is he recruiting off the island? I would think going to Hawaii would be an easy sell.

Ah grasshopper, not as easy as it seems. Coming here means an 18 year old is at least 5000 away from home. Add that to the fact that our games start at midnight eastern time which means very little pub and you have a very slim shot at the Parade all american types .
We did get one last year (Jr Seau's cousin) who will play LB in the NFL someday.

The lure of playing in a wideopen Jones offense helps some.
There was a time when only Utah, Arizona and BYU would recruit here. Now we get the Notre Dames, Nebaskas and KStates of the world.
