Jaworski rates Chiefs QB at No. 20 among NFL starters

Jaworski rates Chiefs QB at No. 20 among NFL starters

The Kansas City Star
Former NFL quarterback-turned-broadcaster Ron Jaworski ranks new Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith No. 20 among the NFL's 32 starting quarterbacks.

That's according to Jaworski's ratings on ESPN's MediaZone site, transcribed from his three-minute daily segments dubbed "Jaws' QB Countdown" on SportsCenter and NFL Live.

Smith, of course, was acquired in a trade from San Francisco this offseason, and has yet to throw a pass in Kansas City (aside from OTAs, that is).

Here are some excerpts from Jaworski's evaluation of Smith:

“A year ago, Smith was coming off his best season in the NFL, having led the 49ers to the NFC Championship. This year, he’s the starting quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs. It was a great move by (Chiefs coach) Andy Reid to acquire Smith.

“The defining element of Smith’s play is efficiency. He executes the offense the way it’s designed, and he makes very few mistakes. Last season – for the second year in a row – he was exceptional on first down. In 2012 he led the NFL in first-down passing, with a quarterback rating of 119. Much of it came off play-action, or in the case of the 49ers, hard run-action out of base personnel. There was no better play-action quarterback last season than Smith. He had a quarterback rating of over 132.

“Smith has been outstanding out of multiple tight end personnel over the last couple of seasons. No quarterback has thrown the ball more with three tight ends on the field. You don’t see that very often in today’s NFL.

“This play was beautifully designed with all three tight ends to the same side. First, look at the impact of the run-action on the two linebackers and the safety. This was hard run-action. Then you see that Delanie Walker’s vertical route occupied the corner. That left Vernon Davis matched on a safety, a safety that initially reacted to run. He had no chance on Davis’ wheel route.

“One area Smith improved in 2012 was in the pre-snap phase of the game. He was much better at the line of scrimmage checking and audibling.

“It will be interesting to see what Andy Reid does in Kansas City. Don’t be surprised if he turns Smith loose a little bit and features an up-tempo offense with an emphasis on quick throws. Remember, Alex Smith played for Urban Meyer at Utah.”

Other QB's that Jaworski has analyzed so far:

No. 32 Matt Flynn

No. 31 Jake Locker

No. 30 Kevin Kolb

No. 29 Chad Henne

No. 28 Mark Sanchez

No. 27 Christian Ponder

No. 26 Brandon Weeden

No. 25 Michael Vick

No. 24 Ryan Tannehill

No. 23 Carson Palmer

No. 22 Sam Bradford

No. 21 Josh Freeman

This is a gross and silly exaggeration that you choose to believe. I think you know this too. I have never stated that you must be 100% sold. All I have ever said is that fans should see this many changes and have SOME hope. I have never given the open-minded people any grief about their wait-n-see, mature dispositions. I only condemn those who claim to know that KC is doomed.. and so they bleed from their vaginas here daily as if the 2013 has no chance of success.

Most of your posts have some semblance of intelligence... so if you truly didn't comprehend this before.. I hope you are at least able to now.

... and for so many crybabies asking me to leave? Why not just put me on that fruity "ignore" list? Feel free. I'm only here to read and possibly discuss football with those that are willing to give the team a chance. Those who do nothing but cry... those who have accepted defeat already... they can all jump off a cliff for all I care. That would only improve CP and the KC fan base.

Absolutely they do and have already come forward and stated as much. Bowe and Charles have said he is the best they have played with. This team wants to win, especially after last year.

If he does end up being just a one- or two-year stopgap, Dorsey got ripped off at an epic level in the trade with the 49ers.

After so many years of dumbassery from the Chiefs front office when it comes to the QB spot, I'm going to HAVE to see the new front office make the right move at that spot before I believe they will.
I think CP's belief in value of 2nd round picks is exaggerated.

They gave up 1 too many 2nd rounders I agree. No need to lose your shit over a 2nd round pick though.

Apparently you've never played sports. When you do everything you can to win and be successful and someone else holds you back, you aren't going to be a real pleasant person.

All the team ever talked about was how great Matt Cassel was. I guarantee you most of the players, even if they liked him as a person, hated him as a QB.

What are you? 12?

I won't argue that Alex Smith was the best available QB this year, at least for 2013 (I'd bet at least one of the QBs taken in this year's draft ends up being better than Smith down the road).

But if the best QB they could get this year is a stop-gap who can't carry the team to playoff success, who ranks somewhere in the bottom half of NFL starting QBs, I would suggest they shouldn't have paid a premium price for the best QB they could get this year.

Acquire a cheaper stop-gap, even if he isn't as good. Build for the future.

Only reason to pay the price they did for Alex Smith is if you think you can win at a significant level with him. Andy Reid and John Dorsey seem to think that's possible, but I think history works against them.

Hate to tell you- Alex will have a great year and the Chiefs will resigned him to a at least a 3 year extension. He will be our QB for the next 4 years at least imo- so you might as well order your Smith jersey and jump on the bandwagon with the rest of us Homer "True fans" lol

Just because the Chiefs haven't drafted well with second round picks in the past doesn't mean they are non-valuable pieces that can be sacrificed without a second thought.

It's not just about the players they could get with that pick. It's about the flexibility those picks afford you in the draft for moving up/moving down/etc. and getting the players you actually want.

Considering what the Chiefs have done with their 2nd rounders- I really doubt the next Junior savil would have made much of a difference for us-lol

I am sure the Chiefs didnt just offer it up- they gave what they had to. It is worth the extra second to have a quality QB for once. Chiefs will dominate this year!!

The Giants are well run organization. If you read that whole blog the guy isn't that harsh on the move IMO anyway.
They haven't yet shown any indications that they are competent either... what's your point?

Define "great" year.

If you're defining that as what he did in San Francisco the past two seasons, there is a wide gulf between what we see as "great."

As I said earlier in the thread, my biggest fear is that Alex Smith will be basically the same QB he was in San Fran, with slightly lower efficiency numbers because he is being asked to be more aggressive.

That would in all likelihood result in an extension, and I think it is the most likely outcome.

I will jump on the Alex Smith bandwagon when the Chiefs beat an elite team in the playoffs BECAUSE of Alex Smith's performance throwing the football. Until then, I will grudgingly root for him while doubting him and hoping they replace him with someone who CAN pull that off.

I would love to be completely wrong about Smith. That would be a great thing as a Chiefs fan. I just can't believe it until I see it.

Now we are getting somewhere. I agree with you. I too thought the price they paid was far out of line. But after I thought about it, they just wanted to get their guy, and they were the highest bidder by a mile. I get and understand all of that. And, I love the fact that they didn't extend him right away, and if he fails, you guys can wash your hands of him after this season, and if they do that, the price is a second, and a third. A steep price to pay for sure, but at the very least they didn't tie themselves to it for longer.

I thought it was a smart play. I still maintain 10 wins. And if you ask me, that's a pretty good price to pay for a 8 win jump. Obviously, 6 wins, not so much. KNow what im saying?

Wait, I thought it was irrelevant what previous front offices have done with picks and qb decisions?

If that's the case why do we think this front office will have shitty 2 round picks like the previous ones have?

Blah blah blah. No one cares, no one is leaving because you are going to throw a tantrum like my 2 year old because you aren't getting everyone to agree with you. Comparing Matt Cassel in any way shape or form to Alex Smith, is stupid. Alex Smith is a well respected, liked, and proven leader. Matt Cassel was forced upon his coach by the GM. Alex Smith was wanted for several years by Andy Reid. Alex Smith is surrounded by coaches, Nagy, Reid, and Pederson, who understand the qb position, and they thought enough of him, to bring him in. This isn't Romeo Crennel bringing in Brady Quinn, this isn't Pioli bringing in Matt Cassel. This is John Dorsey, and Andy Reid getting their guy who was the best of a very bad year of qbs. Yes, a shiny turd, is still a turd. I get that, and he is not the sexiest pick. I can agree with all of that. Spending 1.1 on Geno Smith, would of at least given the appearance that the Chiefs were at least giving a look to the future. Unfortunately, Geno Smith is a project qb who is going to take years to win, and the Chiefs didn't want to wait that long. Essentially, if you just follow the draft, the Chiefs didn't see anyone draftable to even consider making their project qb. You are talking about a guy, who was apart of a front office in green bay, that despite having aaron Rodgers, drafted Brian Brohm, in the second round, and Matt Flynn in the 7th, and cut Brohm in camp. He has proven to have no problems drafting developemental qbs, yet, they didn't draft one at all this year. Think about that for a second.

Oh, and by the way. Im not leaving still.
Leave.
