How come we use the word "homophobia" to describe gay-bashers? It seems like it should mean "fear of homosexuality" but we use it for all things anti-gay. Are we to assume that all anti-gay stuff springs from fear? I don't get it (again). Anybody know whats up with that?

Hey DanT....Your reply is too funny! I think I do get it somewhat now. Some people obsessed with anti-gay stuff may have some sort of identity or self-image problem. But some gay bashers have ideas like "its against the will of God" and that kinda thing. So they have some evangelical calling to root out the gayness in others. They don't have fear of homosexuality, but a religious-philosophical aversion to it. So it seems to me that "homophobic" only describes some of the gay bashers.

P.S. Speaking of too funny....Didja see the 60 Minutes episode on Sunday with Mike Wallace interviewing Boris Yeltsin? It was hilarious! The translator screwed up and told Boris that Mike Wallace had just called him a "thick-skinned hippopotamus." You shoulda seen the look on Yeltsin's face when he heard that! It was too funny. He replied that he thought a famous international journalist like Mike Wallace would be more polite, then he figured it out and said the interperator must be the hippopotamus.

Duck-In regard to your reply #5; The identity, or self image problem, the religious-philosophical aversion that you speak of can be summed up in one word. It is called morality.

I'm not standing up for anyone "bashing" another person because of their lifestyle choices, but I will stand up TO anyone who labels someone homophobic because the moral code that they choose to live their life by plainly states that homosexuality is "an abomination." Just like; drunkenness and riotousness, (ex. Chiefs/Raiders games, of which I have wildly participated,) Adultry, (ex. paying more attention to the cheerleaders than the game, BTDT.) Covetousness, (ex. wishing that I had just half of what Kurt Warner now makes in one year in a savings account.)

Humor aside, I believe you get the point.

Actually, if you literally translate the latin base "homophobia", means fear of human. It is a silly word to begin with.<P>

UD, reading from the manual again? If you don't like someones point of view it's because you are more enlightened than they. If they don't like your point of view than they are "homophobes", "right wingers" or any denigrating term you can use.

UD,

I think you can make a case that all hostility, hatred, etc. (pretty much everything ugly about humans) ultimately comes from fear. However, hating or attacking gays might actually stem from other fears than those about ones own sexuality. The gay hatred may just be a scapegoat for other fears that the individual is struggling with.

Thank you, all. I think DanT is right. People obsessed with anti-gay activities may have something going on internally that relates to insecurities about their own sexuality. The opposite of love is not hate, but indifference. Dan has no problem with others having their bologna - I guess he's OK about it.

And KC Jones also has a good point about fear in general possibly being the cause of all human ugliness. Maybe a dude that wants to be seen as studly could have a fear of seeming efeminate, so he gay bashes to show others that he's macho.

But Kurt speaks to the incongruity that raised my question. Some folks believe that homosexuality is an abomination because the moral code that they subscribe to says it is. And "homophobic" doesn't seem to apply in that case, yet, here in the Bay Area, that word is used to describe them as well. I guess its one of those "political correctness" things that I so abhor. If so, I will banish it from my vocabulary. Incidently, I am not anti-gay. I couldn't care less what other people choose to do in their bedrooms.

Oxford may have it - "homophobic" could be a word used to bash philosophies that draw different conclusions than one would like.

(What manual?)

I guess I can't aggree to the theory that you are "afraid" of something just because you don't like it.
1. i'm very confident in my masculinity, I just happen to think it is nasty...no differnt that the $h!t eaters, people who like getting beat with whips, etc...

I guess it would make me a turdophobic because I don't think there should be parades promoting that particular habit. I don't care what anyone else does with their private lives...just don't talk to me without eating a tic tac.....

you won't see me marching in the rainbow parade or S&M or packing a sign saying
"poop, its whats for dinner".

It doesn't make someone a "hater" to have an unpc opinion.
